K&L Notes

*World Whisky Award Winner: Best Bourbon 7 Years and Under (2010)* *Malt Advocate Distillery of the Year Award (2008)* Located in Lawrenceburg, this storied distillery has a long history dating back to 1818. It is run by Jim Rutledge, one of the best distillers working in the business today. They are a very unique distillery because they make ten different bourbon formulas--two different mash bills with five different strains of yeast--and are known for their more mellow and delicate style of bourbon. Yellow Label is the only one of their whiskies to feature a blend of all ten formulas. It is an outstanding example of elegance and restraint even with the toasty barrel influence. This is a favorite American bourbon choice among bartenders the world over because it mixes so well and adds a sophisticated flare to any drink. Try Master Distiller Jim Rutledge's Perfect Manhattan: "3 parts Four Roses Yellow Label, 1 part dry Vermouth, 1 part sweet Vermouth. Shake ingredients over ice. Pour into chilled Martini glass. Serve with twist of lemon or orange (lemon is the traditional garnish, however, orange treats the flavors of the bourbon more gently.) It's not too sweet. Just right with a little bit of citrus that works perfectly with the mellow flavors of Four Roses Yellow Label. This drink is something that adds a mellow touch to just about any social occasion.

I can't tell you the number of times we've had some older timer walk in off the street and beckon me over to point out the Four Roses Yellow Label, "now why does a nice store like yours carry this CRAP!" Wait a second there Sir. You may remember the old Yellow Label blend that Four Roses used to sell back in the bad old Seagram days and indeed that was a dog, but this is by no means that! The labels are nearly identical, but this one is filled only with Straight Bourbons from one of Kentucky's best. The blend of their ten recipes is one of the easiest Bourbons to get behind in the store and represents a stupendous value. Four Roses is high rye Bourbon, even their low rye recipe is high rye compared to some of their competitors. That wonderful grainy spice is tempered by the various yeast strains and the ultimate result is a wonderful easy drinking bourbon for a VERY reasonable price. Expect a nose of sweet barrel spice, caramelized sugars, and delicate floral notes. The palate has a bit more savory spice, but is still dominated by the sweet flavors of honey, ripe apples and more vanilla. Easy drinking and easy on the pocket book.

Bourbon & Rye are the USA's great contribution to the world of spirits, and the Four Roses has been an ambassador bottle for the category internationally for many years. This delicious Bourbon makes a fine Manhattan, as recommended above, but it also makes a great Whiskey Sour, my favorite cold brown liquor cocktail. At home we use equal parts Meyer lemon from our dwarf tree and Bourbon, with one teaspoon of superfine sugar per shot of whiskey, mixing it all thoroughly before pouring over ice in a rocks glass. We then garnish with a slice of Meyer lemon and a maraschino cherry. This old-fashioned drink is a classic for a reason; it is very refreshing and synergistic. I hope you will try it!

So smooth you won't think it's bourbon. Honestly, the distiller himself said he has problems selling it sometimes because people don't think it's bourbon, but I can vouch for him. It's bourbon alright, and it's divine. Your friends will be asking where you got it.
