2002 De Meric "Cuvée Rene Millesime" Brut Champagne

SKU #1038521

This fantastic Champagne was made by De Meric as a tribute to Mr. Rene Collard, and it is one of the greatest Champagnes that we stock at any price. It is made exclusively from biodynamic meunier from the village of Crouttes-sur-Marne in the western part of Champagne. It was aged in old, small oak casks before bottling in 2003. The color is a gorgeous light gold, with an amazingly compact and powerful bead. On the nose it is explosively spicy with caramel apple and freshly-toasted bread notes heading a long list of adjectives. On the palate it is savory, with a "more pinot noir than pinot noir" flavor that I found to be one of the most complex I have ever had. This is not shy Champagne, and I think it would be perfect to pair with foie gras or a rich pate on the most special of occasions for the smallest of parties! This wine should age gracefully for as long as you care to hold it... If you can keep your hands off of it! (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer)

Cinnamon and I drank this last night with some fava bean crostini to start off a little dinner party and it was every bit as great as I had hoped. This Champagne is a little bit to concentrated and serious as the aperitif, but paired up with the creamy favas it was wonderful. This is big, dry, complex Champagne and I wouldn't open it for any more than four people... Two would probably be better! There is just to much stuff going on in the wine to understand in the first glass.

If you buy one special bottle of Champagne this season, this should be the one. A wonderful homage to the 100% meunier Champagnes of Rene Collard, this is beautiful AND made from organic grapes to boot. I love the hazelnut and puff pastry aromas, the slightly sherried quality on the palate and the maripan notes that marry perfectly with the cherry fruit. Delicious.

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.

- The French region of Champagne (comprised of the towns of Rheims, Epernay, and Ay) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and winemaking traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range from the basic brut (often blends of several vintages), single vintage champagnes, and rose.
