Big, ripe and complex, but light on its feet. An elegant, spicy mix of rich currant, anise, toasty oak, espresso and subtle herbal scents, all of which fold together nicely, ending with a long, persistent finish. *Highly Recommended, Top 100 Wines of 2008*

Made up of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Petit Verdot and 6% Malbec, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill Estate Vineyard opens with earthy notions of truffles and mossy bark with savory elements of tapenade, Indian spices and smoked meats over a core of black cherry pie and crème de cassis. Full-bodied and firmly structured with chewy tannins and background freshness, it gives a good core of muscular fruit, finishing long and earthy. (LPB)

Decanter
Donn Chappellet was the first grower, in 1967, to plant vineyards in the verdant Pritchard Hill area that lies a few miles east of Rutherford, later followed by prestigious producers such as Colgin and Bryant. Limited production keeps prices high, but the quality is consistently good. This 2005 is showing just slight evolution, with dense, smoky, spicy aromas and an attractive cedary character. It's fleshy and rounded, showing heft and power without obscuring the core of blackcurrant fruit. The acidity is modest, yet the wine remains lively, with a finish that's spicy, complex, and persistent. (SB)

Vinous
Bright medium ruby. Crushed rock, cassis, licorice, bitter chocolate and graphite on the nose. Extremely youthful wine with lovely intensity and mineral firmness to its dark berry flavors. Slightly herbal and medicinal in the style of the year but not hard. Developing very slowly and still quite primary today. Tannins are very suave and fine. Still plenty of life ahead of it. (ST) 92+

K&L Notes
Chappellet's "Pritchard Hill" Cabernet Sauvignon is limited production bottling of select fruit from the rugged Napa Valley vineyard. The wine's concentrated nose balances sweet berry and plum fruit with smoky black tea, dark chocolate and fresh coffee aromas. The aromatics segue into mouthcoating currant, cherry, licorice and oak spice flavors. Hints of Petit Verdot and Malbec add complexity to this already structured and robust red.
