2005 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echèzeaux Grand Cru

SKU #1037413 94-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2005 Echezeaux delivers ravishingly sweet, high-toned aromas of black raspberry, maraschino, marzipan, marmalade and iodine. It saturates the palate with sweet, ripe fruit and inner-mouth perfume, while introducing layers of fresh meat and shrimp-shell minerality. The texture is amazingly creamy and polished, and the long, refined finish adds an alluring hint of mocha. Superb saturation of ultra-ripe fruit but with freshness; remarkable concentration yet elegance, lift, indeed near weightlessness: this is 2005 at its best. (DS) Inner quote mark (4/2007)

94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

Outer quote mark The soaring nose of spicy cassis, black cherry and violets this displayed from cask has now become very reserved and brooding, merging into rich, full and utterly delicious flavors that possess a beguiling texture and unusually fine tannins compared to what I typically see with the Ech. This is a big wine by any measure with excellent mid-palate density and superb length. Really good stuff and as the "value" play in the DRC line-up, one to strongly consider because it surpasses its normal quality level by more than a fair margin in 2005. Inner quote mark (1/2008)

94 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Next to the super-refined, delicate 2006s, the 2005s come across as deeper and richer in personality. That is quite evident in the 2005 Échézeaux, a wonderfully lifted, precise Burgundy that is just starting to blossom. Today, the 2005 is all about nuance and detail. This is a terrific showing. Once again, in 2005 the Échézeaux is a real overachiever. (AG) Inner quote mark (12/2013)

Outer quote mark This red shows wonderful purity of fruit, with cherry and berry flavors and a touch of spice. Harmonious, yet with underlying power. Despite some reserve and a hint of a vegetal note, this is the most approachable of the range. (BS, Web-2012) Inner quote mark

Outer quote mark Good deep red. Explosive aromas of redcurrant liqueur, tobacco, tar, minerals and chocolate, plus hints of decadent underbrush. Sweet redcurrant and mocha flavors show a slightly roasted aspect and elevated alcohol but also possess very good vinosity, with complicating soil tones adding nuance. Finishes uncompromisingly dry, with substantial tannins. I'd expect this seriously deep wine to go into a shell in the very near future. (ST) 92+ Inner quote mark (3/2008)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Mid blueish crimson with quite a pale rim. Light nose initially with a hint of undergrowth but lots of ripe sweetness underneath. Jewel bright, so bright, fruit – not that intense, but very winning, and it opened up in the glass becoming more intense and super-bright cherry fruity with the merest hint of espresso. Marked acidity on the palate is the first impression and then some oak tannin still. Very, very youthful – much more introspective than I remember the 2004s at this stage. Even severe. You take this on faith at this stage because the fruit weight is not sufficient to distract from all the infant aspects of acid and tannin. (JR) 18.5/20 Inner quote mark (2/2008)

K&L Notes

94 points Neal Martin's Wine Journal: "A pale ruby colour with soft, light crimson rim. This has simply a gorgeous, quite ravishing nose that is nigh irresistible. Bright red cherries fruit, wild strawberries infused with very ripe, almost exotic fruit such as star anis, blood orange and a touch of apricot. Very fine definition. After five minutes in the glass the nose is billowing, gaining intensity with more of the red fruit component taking over from the exotic. Hints of mocha and smoke. Very complex bouquet for an Echezeaux. After fifteen minutes the nose is mellowing out, harmonizing. The palate is medium-bodied, very good acidity, vibrant and vivacious with pretty red-berried fruit, a touch of wild hedgerow and a touch of bilberry. The filigree tannins ensure this is a very approachable, feminine wine with a light but persistent, graceful finish with just a touch of earthiness. A precocious charmer." (02/2008)
