 Smoky oak spice and suggestions of berries join the more conventional themes of well-ripened black-cherries in the deep and well-formed aromas of this very hedonistic Pinot Noir, and the wine's flavors show no let-up in richness with a fine interplay of plums, cherries, sweet oak and spice. A mouth-filling wine that is framed with a bit more than varietally typical tannins, it is built with an eye to real improvement with age and has the fruity stuffing and depth to grow increasingly better for five or more years.  Tightly wound, intense and concentrated, with a complex mix of earthy cherry, wild berry, blueberry and spicy nutmeg notes. Tannins provide firm structure. The mineral and pebble flavors join the rich fruit on the finish.  (11/2006)

 The Pommard-like, stern, austerely-styled, muscular, angular 2004 Pinot Noir Clos Pepe displays abundant amounts of berry fruit intermixed with sweet cherry, earthy, spicy characteristics. While it was the most difficult of these Pinots to evaluate, I liked its style and could have easily confused it with a French premier cru Pommard in a blind tasting. It will benefit from another year or so of bottle age, and should drink well for 7-8 years or longer.  (8/2006)
