2004 Opus One Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

SKU #1032915 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Aged in 100% new French oak for 17 months and in bottle for 14 months prior to release, the 2004 Opus One is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. It boasts a dense ruby/purple color along with a sweet bouquet of lead pencil shavings, black currants and a hint of toasty oak. More evolved than usual, this full-bodied, opulent 2004 is part of the new wave of Opus Ones made under the administration of Philippe Dhalluin, the administrator of Mouton Rothschild, who has begun to exploit this estate’s enormous potential. 93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2004 Opus One is the first wine in this vertical that is still completely primary. Juicy, layered and expressive, the 2004 needs at least five more years in the cellar to shed some of its youthful exuberance, but frankly that may not be enough. There is a lot of promise here. The blend is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec. (AG) 93+ Inner quote mark (6/2013)

93 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Deftly balanced and medium-bodied, this is a wine of finesse and refinement, highlighted by pure, rich flavors of blackberry and blueberry, with hints of cedar and mocha. Maintains an elegant core. (JL, Web Only-2014) Inner quote mark

Outer quote mark This is very aromatic, with notes of lavender, cedar, black olives, almonds, and hints of currant bush. Full bodied with nice fruit, with creme de cassis and light coffee notes. This is delicious now. Inner quote mark (2/2011)

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Good full ruby. Roasted black raspberry, blackberry, spicecake, licorice, minerals and nutty oak on the nose. Denser than the 2005 and a step up in intensity but nicely light on its feet. There's lovely sweetness to the black fruit and licorice flavors. Finishes with big but sweet tannins and a lingering minerality. (ST) 91+ Inner quote mark (5/2007)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Might fool Bordeaux devotees with its leafy, earth, tobacco and pencil-lead nose and very firm structure. Black cherry, cassis and dark chocolate, with cedar and spice notes. Grippy tannins, though not austere. (LM) 17.5/20 points Inner quote mark (6/2008)

K&L Notes

Opus One was founded as a joint venture between Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, and in 1984 released its first vintage, the 1979. It has since become an international success and a landmark winery in Napa. Comprised of 169 acres of vineyards in Napa Valley, the winery produces a luxury Bordeaux-style blend. 93 points, Lisa Perrotti Brown, The Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet-purple colour. Intense, very purely fruited nose of warm cassis, mocha, black pepper, black olives and cigar box. Great concentration of juicy fruit on the palate, which is well supported by a firm backbone of medium to high acidity and a medium to high, fine grained tannins. Nicely balanced though the oak is still dominating slightly. Long finish." (07/2009)
