2005 Roar "Rosella's Vineyard" Santa Lucia Highlands Syrah

SKU #1032494 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The inky/blue/black-tinged 2005 Syrah Rosella’s Vineyard offers up scents of charcoal, acacia flowers, blackberries, blueberries, and burning embers. This full-bodied, powerful, concentrated effort reveals more structure than the Santa Lucia bottling as well as a distinct minerality/earthiness. (RP) Inner quote mark (8/2007)

91 points Connoisseurs Guide

Outer quote mark *Two Stars* Once given the chance to shake off a momentary touch of earth in the nose, this very rich and well-extracted wine keys convincingly on deep, cherry-like fruit and sports a full measure of sweet oak spice along with complexing suggestions of cola, pie crust and toast. It is rounded and a just a bit fat in feel at the start, but it steers clear of softness and its seamlessly fit tannins and integral finishing acidity ensure a few years of positive growth. K&L Notes

Named for the sounds of the coastal winds and mountain creeks of the Santa Lucia Highlands, Roar was launched in 2003 by Gary and Rosella Franscioni. The duo, along with Gary Pisoni and Adam and Dianna Lee of Siduri wines, helped catapult the Santa Lucia Highlands to fame with phenomenal, high-scoring vineyard-designated wines from Rosella's and Garys' Vineyards (the Franscionis co-own the latter with Pisoni). Their 2005 "Rosella's Vineyard" Santa Lucia Highlands Syrah is a beautiful, harmonious wine illustrative of mountain fruit. It shows fresh, lively aromas with hints of citrus and earth and round, creamy, blackberry flavors on the palate. Aged in 16% new French oak, this wine is perfect with a meal tonight and will continue to drink nicely for the next five years.
