2004 Cos d'Estournel, St-Estèphe

SKU #1031882 95 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark This is another example of the wonderful 2004 vintage for Bordeaux. They are so delicious to drink now. The Cos is one of the best out there. And very reasonably priced at less than $150 a bottle. The charcuterie that hits you as soon as you open this Bordeaux is overwhelming: It's smoky, spicy and sexy. Minutes later you realize the complexity on offer, catching just a scent of the dark fruits hidden beneath, and before those, long and wonderful hints of balsamic vinegar. On the palate this shows elegance and finesse thanks to fabulous balance, extremely integrated tannins and a long and glorious finish. This is so satisfying and wonderful now, but the slightly bitter aftertaste on the rear palate suggests this could do with at least another 10 years before opening. Inner quote mark (6/2016)

Outer quote mark The 2004 Cos d'Estournel is a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet in color with a touch of brick, the nose is still very youthful, sporting notions of plum preserves, blackcurrant cordial and Black Forest cake with hints of garrigue, wild sage, charcuterie, black olives and unsmoked cigars. The medium to full-bodied palate is generously fruited with bags of earthy and black fruit preserves layers, framed by chewy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long. Drink now-2033. Outer quote mark A grand vintage of Cos, shepherded by Jean-Guillaume Prats in the direction of Lafite's elegance, just across the border in Pauillac. The wine has an aristocratic beauty, its succulent ripe fruit ripened to powerful tension on the uplift of limestone that rises under the vines. The oak combines with the fruitiness of the wine to give the impression of a long pull on a fine cigar. With several days of air, the surface polish yields and the wine reveals its ironbound tannins, a structure that will set the course for two decades of development before it approaches peak drinking. Outer quote mark Very generous, with lovely mouthfeel. The creamy fruit drapes over warm, pebbly tannins, allowing the dark plum and currant fruit to meld with the bay and roasted alder notes. The finish has a grip of earth and stretches out nicely. On point right now. (JM, Web Only-2016) Inner quote mark

Outer quote mark This wasn't an easy vintage when young because there was quite a bit of rain through the season, leading to a fairly high yield with some dilution in the grapes. It has needed a lot of time to become harmonious and to melt into itself, but this wine displays clever winemaking decisions. It’s clearly ready to drink now, with soft tannins and brambly fruits joined by tight, black truffles that give spice but also freshness and energy that kicks in through the mid-palate, leading to a mouthwatering finish. The wine was kept on its lees in barrel during ageing without racking, to protect it from oxygen as much as possible. Drinking Window 2018-2030. (JA) Inner quote mark (7/2018)

Outer quote mark Deep red-ruby. Aromas of cassis, plum, licorice and coconutty oak. Round, suave and ripe, with lovely depth of flavor and a pliant, full texture for the year. This doesn't have quite the thrust of the 2006, but it's lively and fresh, and finishes ripely tannic and long. (ST) Inner quote mark (6/2007)

K&L Notes

More Cabernet than usual; even more than the 2003. Mocha aromas mixed with smoke and spice. Cola nuances also. Great structure and power. Very long - tons of everything. One of the best of 2004. 94 points Neal Martin's Wine Journal: "This Cos d’Estournel has great potential. The nose has certainly closed down since I last tasted it at en primeur, less floral and more tertiary with a surly broody quality. Cedar and a hint of dark chocolate coming through with aeration, roasted herbs. Very well defined. The full-bodied palate is very tannic structure with a solidity that suggests extended cellaring is mandatory. This Cos d’Estournel is powerful and masculine, yet with wonderful freshness and vitality and a slight savoury tang evolving with further aeration on the persistent finish. Drink 2018-2035+."
