Firm, rich and intense, with a complex band of ripe currant, anise, nutmeg and black cherry fruit that slowly unfolds, revealing extra layers of concentration and depth and finishing with a long yet tightly wound core of flavors. Needs time or decanting. Best from 2007 through 2014. (11/2005)
When it comes to fine Cabernet Sauvignon, Portfolio is regularly found at the head of its class, and in 2002 it again earns a place among the better wines to be had if not necessarily leading the way. As usual, it is simply swimming in wonderfully sweet oak, but its genuinely juicy beginnings are this time contrasted by evident coarseness as chalky tannins grab hold at the finish. It will benefit markedly from the four or five years of age. (8/2005)
