2005 Melville "Clone 777" Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir

SKU #1031706

Winemaker's note: 777 is from one of the new and more popular series of clones appearing in the United States since 1987. Its origins stem from the Domaine Ponsot in Morey-St-Denis, Burgundy, France. Winemakers prize [this clone] for its impressive concentrations, great intensity, and depth of black fruit flavor (John Haeger, North American Pinot Noir). Because of the resurgence and attention put towards this newer clonal material, almost every new pinot noir vineyard in California and Oregon will have some plantings of this popular clone. Melville, for instance, has over eleven acres committed to it. It is known as an early ripening clone with small clusters and a tight berry configuration. It also offers dark red colors and tastes rich, velvety and nuanced. It produces a very complete wine on its own and thus is often bottled individually as a stand-alone wine. Consistent with those qualities mentioned above but with the added complexity of intense pure red tropical and blue fruits with a very silky, velvety texture. Lends itself well for stem-inclusion during fermentation where we generally use about one-third to half as whole clusters.
