The 2002 Martha’s Vineyard is another very strong vintage for the iconic Napa bottling. The bouquet is simply great, as it delivers a classic mix of red and black cherries, eucalyptus, chocolate, a touch of meatiness, Asian spices, soil tones and cedar. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, complex and very deep, with great attack, a sappy core of fruit, ripe, round tannins, impeccable focus and balance and just a bit of wood spice currently coloring the very long and tangy finish. Another beautiful vintage of Martha’s, the 2002 should begin to really drink well in another five or six years and last many, many decades. (Drink between 2016-2045)

Tightly knit and backward, the 2002 Martha’s Vineyard offers hints of black cherries, black currants, earth, new saddle leather and spice box. Full-bodied, dense and concentrated as well as high in tannin, this youthful effort no longer reveals this cuvee’s famous eucalyptus aroma, but it does not lack for power, richness or aging potential. Drink it over the next 20+ years. (RP) 92+

Classic Martha’s, with red fruits, mint, eucalyptus and leafy herbs on the nose and palate. Also typical: a taste of a chocolate-covered cherry. Herb tinged, balanced and with brisk acidity. 17.5/20 points. (JR)

K&L Notes
The 2002 Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a magnificent wine, classic in style, and showing immense power balanced with lush, sweet tannins. The elegant structure of this wine is a compliment to the purity of the varietal fruit from Martha's Vineyard and a lovely reflection of its Oakville appellation. You are immediately drawn to the celebrated minty aroma of this Cabernet and swept away by the authenticity of its taste--a mingling of velvety chocolate with ripe berries. The impressive balance makes this wine accessible now, but it will also reward drinking for many years to come.
