This medium-to-dark ruby-colored wine is a grand cru in quality, if not officially. Its perfumed nose of roses, sweet red fruits, blackberries, and hints of freshly laid asphalt leads to a stunning, medium-to-full-bodied, and silky-textured personality. Readers will be enthralled by this wine's richness, purity, and precision, as well as by its extraction and depth of fruit. It offers intense layers of black cherries, Asian spices, and just a faint hint of new oak toastiness. This refined, yet muscular, and formidably long Amoureuses is a formidable wine. (PR)

Saturated ruby-red. Supersweet aromas of raspberry, currant, graphite and sweet oak, plus an exotic suggestion of citrus fruit. Silky and sweet, if rather unforthcoming in the middle palate; offers great concentration and a near perfect sugar/acid balance. Firm tannins are covered by fruit. Great whiplash of a finish. This has considerable early appeal but will be even better after seven or eight years of additional bottle aging. (ST) 93+

K&L Notes
Neal Martin: "The 1996 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Amoureuses has a fresher nose than the 2003: baked cherries, soy, mushroom -- a little rustic but there is clean fruit here and no volatility. The palate is medium-bodied with quite sharp tannin, a little abrasive even after almost 20 years. It is quite masculine in the mouth with some severity on the dry and rather rusty finish. Drink now." (Wine Advocate, 12/2015)
