2003 Scarecrow Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1023047 98 points Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark This inky purple-colored wine has an extraordinary nose of sweet black cherry jam intermixed with licorice, spice box, and cedar. It has sensational richness, but the purity, elegance, and overall nuance of this wine are what set it apart and give it a very distinctive character all its own. This is a fabulous Cabernet Sauvignon... (RP) Inner quote mark (12/2006)

K&L Notes

Scarecrow is the product of the vineyards of the legendary J.J. Cohn (producer of Wizard of Oz) and the name pays tribute to him. The vineyards are equally remarkable and historied. When John Daniel, Jr., convinced his neighbor J.J. Cohn to plant these vineyards in 1945, he may have known the potential. The vineyards have provided fruit for many spectacular wines, including the early and magnificent Inglenook Cabernets, and later for many of the iconic Napa Cabs of more modern times. The pre-phylloxera St-George rootstock and incredible old vines now produce the fruit for Scarecrow. The winemaker is Celia Welch.
