Gaston Chiquet "Tradition" Brut Champagne

SKU #1022057 91 points Wine Spectator

There's a crunchiness to the texture and acidic frame of this lively Champagne. Balanced overall, offering flavors of Anjou pear, star anise and lemon curd underscored by minerally chalk and smoke accents. Disgorged May 2016. Drink now through 2020. (AN) (11/2017)

A restrained nose speaks of yeast, brioche, green apple and a hint of citrus. In much the same fashion as the Rosé the supporting mousse is relatively soft though it’s finer and is in keeping with the understated and relatively dry finish that offers solid complexity. This is really quite pretty and is drinking perfectly well now. (1/2018)

This bottling of Brut Tradition from Nicolas Chiquet is still from the base year of 2010, as he skipped shipping a 2011 base year bottling to the US and instead extended the previous base year bottling for another year. This cuvée is its customary cépages of forty percent pinot meunier, thirty-five percent chardonnay and twenty-five percent pinot noir. I tasted this same disgorgement a year ago, with the extra twelve months in the bottle allowing the wine to continue to blossom, offering up a superb bouquet of apple, white peach, fresh-baked bread, a complex base of soil, gentle smokiness and a lovely, floral topnote that seems more pronounced than a year ago. On the palate the wine is full, crisp, complex and rock solid at the core, with bright acids and very good length and grip on the balanced finish. As was the case last year, the only slight demerit for this wine is that the mousse is slightly coarse, but it is a minor flaw in an otherwise very tasty bottle. (Disgorged January 2015). (Drink between 2017-2030) 90+ (9/2017)

The NV Brut Tradition is an attractive entry-level wine from Gaston-Chiquet. Apricot, lemon confit, baked apple tart, vanillin and toasty notes add to the wine's racy, open-knit personality. Drink it over the next few years. This release is based on the 2012 vintage and is a blend of 40% Meunier, 35% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir. Disgorged: July 2017. (11/2018)

K&L Notes

Brothers Fernand and Gaston Chiquet created the Champagne house Chiquet Brothers back in 1919. The pair were pioneers in the region, according to the winery they were the very first winemakers to keep their own grapes, and to vinify them into wines that they would sell. According to wine writer Piet Liem: "This is one of the finest grower estates in the Grande Vallée de lar Marne. Chiquet's wines combine a generous depth of fruit with a pronounced character of place--if you want to know what the wines of the Grande Vallée should feel like, these are an excellent introduction. Chiquet's wines generally show well young, thanks to the forward fruitiness of their Marne terroirs. Yet with their balance and depth they can also age extremely well, even the non-vintage Brut Tradition, as I've seen from several old examples dating all the way back to 1964."
