1998 Kay Brothers "Amery Hillside" Shiraz McClaren Vale South Australia

SKU #1019624 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 1998 Shiraz Hillside was aged in 100% new American oak from relatively young vines that are the same clone of Shiraz as planted in the Block 6, which still contains 100+ year old vines. This is a full throttle, artisinal, powerful, super-concentrated wine with opaque black/purple color, notes of new oak intermixed with licorice, blackberry, cassis, asphalt, and leather. The wine is huge, massive, chewy, and unctuously textured. It is a total turn-on. Drink it over the next 15-20+ years. (RP) (6/2001)

93 points James Halliday

Medium to full red-purple; very ripe, rich and concentrated blackberry, plum and earth aromas foreshadow a palate with seductively sweet dark berry and dark chocolate flavours surrounded by supple tannins. Minimal oak input throughout. (7/2011)

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Full ruby. Roasted nutty black fruits, meat, graphite and smoky oak on the nose. A fat, dense fruit bomb, with vibrant flavors of cassis, smoked meat, tar and leather. This boasts remarkable fruit for six-year-old vines. Chewy finish features thoroughly lush tannins. (ST) (7/2001)
