2002 Haut Bergey Rouge, Pessac-Léognan

SKU #1016806 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Red-ruby. Sexy aromas of blackberry, chocolate, coffee, smoke and game; a bit Burgundian. Then smoky, pliant and seamless, with a plump middle and moderate density. Finishes with smooth, slightly dusty tannins and lingering notes of baking spices and nutty oak. My favorite of these three vintages today, showing considerable early appeal. Inner quote mark (4/2005)

K&L Notes

Bought by Sylviane Garcin-Cathaird in the 1990s, this estate has undergone a revolution in quality following an extensive renovation and the building of three new chais, as well as improvements in the vineyard. There are 43 acres of producing red grape vines, and about four acres of white grape vines. The vineyard consists of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot while 3 hectares are planted with 65% Sauvignon Blanc and 35% Semillon. Grapes are harvested by hand, while the wine-making and ageing processes are carefully controlled by an on-site analysis laboratory. A great value producer in Pessac!

This is one of the stunning K&L aged-Bordeaux values that tend to disappear very quickly! Two decades in, this is charming, silky smooth and full of savory Bordeaux goodness. It has ripe dark cherry fruit, peppercorn, and smoky scorched earth with a touch of cigar box to make this the perfect accompaniment for grilled ribeye or roasted lamb. This is a great candidate to grab a case of - it is priced for everyday drinking, but will certainly hold up for Sunday dinner, too.
