2001 Robert Sinskey Napa Cabernet Franc

Sinskey has been making Cabernet Franc from its cool-climate Vandal Vineyard since 1991, and with this vintage its clear they've learned something about this majestic varietal. Lots for this cuvee were fermented with natural yeasts in open top fermenters using the gentle punch down method. The wine then spent 17 months in a combination of one to four-year-old French oak. After barrel aging a small amount of Vandal Vineyard cabernet sauvignon was blended into the wine for more Bordeaux-like complexity. This wine is big, with firm aromas and flavors of cassis, dark cherry and other jammy red fruits with just a touch of green olive or fresh earth. The aromas are ripe without being over ripe. The oak complements the fruit and lends balance to the mid-palate. The tannin is apparent, suggesting that this wine will age gracefully, yet it is in balance with the weight of the wine. The mid-palate richness carries through to the long, mouth-watering finish.

Cabernet Franc

- While Cabernet Franc, a parent with Sauvignon Blanc to the ubiquitous Cabernet Sauvignon, frequently plays second fiddle in Bordeaux blends (though it does get more props on the Right Bank, where it dominates Cheval Blanc), this lighter, higher acid/lower tannin, early-maturing, perfumed red varietal is far from a wallflower. It is the headliner in the Loire Valley appellations of Saumur-Champigny, Bourgueil, St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Chinon and Anjou-Villages, where it makes exceptional, food-friendly wines. Outside of France, Cabernet Franc can be found in northern Italy, particularly in Friuli and in California where it is frequently used as a blending grape in Bordeaux-style wines. Heartier in the cold than Cabernet Sauvignon, Cab Franc is gaining a foothold in northern and eastern wine regions like Canada, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
