Leslie Rudd’s beautiful, fully mature 2001 Rudd Estate Proprietary Red (a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot) boasts a dense plum/purple hue as well as a sweet bouquet of chocolate, creme de cassis, truffles, damp earth and wood smoke. Opulent and medium to full-bodied with sweet tannins and low acidity, it can be enjoyed now and over the next 15+ years. (RP)

Good deep medium ruby. Aromas of blackberry, cassis, minerals and spice cake; showing more lift today than the 2001 cabernet. Sweet but firm flavors of blackberry, cassis, tar, minerals and menthol. Quite youthfully backward, with more depth than the cabernet sauvignon bottling. The supple, fine tannins reach the teeth. The higher percentage of new oak (85%, vs. 50% for the cabernet) dusts the finish with exotic spices. (ST) 92+

Supple, with complex currant, anise, mineral, herb and sage flavors that are well-defined, adding hints of espresso and fresh earth. The tannins are ripe and fine-grained and the finish reveals extra dimensions of depth and complexity. (JL)
