2000 Brane-Cantenac, Margaux

SKU #1005909 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2000 Brane-Cantenac is a blend of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 55% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. It has a really wonderful bouquet that is coming into its own: potent with black truffle and gravel infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a saline tang on the entry. It is not a powerful or huge wine, but there is impressive length here and genuine complexity on the finish, with black truffle, cedar and tobacco notes vying for attention. Henri Lurton oversaw a really quite fabulous, almost aristocratic Brane-Cantenac in this millennial year. (NM) Inner quote mark (12/2016)

Outer quote mark Very rich aromas of ripe strawberries, spices and flowers follow through to a full body with velvety tannins and an outstanding structure. It’s always a little austere. But so much there. Just coming around now. Delicious. Inner quote mark (7/2013)

91 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2000 Brane-Cantenac was picked from September 25 to October 8 with 12.8° alcohol. It has a lovely bouquet not dissimilar to previous bottles, notes of gravel and black truffle unfolding in the glass to accompany the satisfying black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity. Perhaps it is a little more conservative compared to recent vintages, although it is nicely proportioned, replete with cedar and tobacco toward the satisfying finish. Maybe it has dispensed with a little vigor in recent months? This is still a very fine millennial Brane-Cantenac. Tasted at the Brane-Cantenac vertical at the château. (NM) Inner quote mark (1/2019)

91 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Rather open, with a briary backdrop to the core of juicy plum, blackberry and black currant confiture notes. There are fresh anise and lilac flavors too, with the finish showing a cedary echo while staying supple in feel overall. (JM, Web-2016) Inner quote mark

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Mid ruby. Lots of solid development even if not an ethereal heart-stopping moment on the nose. Neat and well balanced and perhaps at its peak already. Fresh fruit and a bit of lusciousness. Certainly no hint of under-ripeness. 17/20 points. (JR) Inner quote mark (3/2010)

K&L Notes

92 points Robert Parker in Wine Advocate: "Fully mature and very attractive, the 2000 Brane Cantenac, which started a succession of brilliant wines from this famous estate in the Margaux appellation, has a dark plum/ruby/purple color, a sweet, juicy nose of blue, red, and black fruits, and a hint of damp earth as well as subtle herbs. Spicy, round, complex, very lush, and at its plateau of maturity, this wine should continue to drink well for another 10-15 years at minimum. This is Margaux elegance and silkiness at its very best." Beautiful and elegant, with the classic Margaux notes of violets and coffee, along with bright notes of red fruit as well. It is developing beautifully and showing notes of forest floor, with very soft tannins, lending to a more rounded structure. I would say this wine would be a perfect bottle for a very fancy dinner.

2000. The millennial vintage. Cooler, wetter conditions earlier in the year eventually gave way to warm, sunny weather in August and September, allowing for good ripening of the grapes and a harvest under ideal conditions. Notwithstanding, at Brane Cantenac in order to produce the best possible wine for the vintage a much stricter selection than usual was made for the first wine (less than 30% of total production) and a higher proportion of Merlot was used (55%). A little more than 15 years later the results speak for themselves. The 2000 Brane Cantenac, Margaux is typical of the best wines of the vintage with generous ripe, sweet red and black fruits and admirable mid-palate weight. The wine offers a rich, sensuous texture with good underlying structure – lively acidity and firm, fine tannins. The wines from this 2000 vintage are beginning to diverge in terms of their development. Some are ripe and forward and ready to drink. Others can be enjoyed now but clearly have a long life ahead of them. Others still remain largely closed and will require additional cellaring before their full promise is revealed. Fortunately, the 2000 Brane Cantenac falls into the middle category. Though some signs of bottle age have begun to emerge, the wine is perhaps five to ten years away from the peak of maturity. Drink now or hold.

Another great value from the 2000 vintage. Plenty of cassis aromas and flavors. Has structure for ageing. Decant one hour.
Drink from 2015 to 2025
