1999 Calera "Reed" Mt. Harlan Pinot Noir (Previously $80)

SKU #1005639 91 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Dry and dusty, with raspberry aromas and lots of terroir-driven spice and verve. This wine feels mature and developed on your palate, surely a result of its age. Flavors of red fruit and cocoa coat your mouth, followed by a smooth, herbal finish. Very complex and a Pinot apart from the crowd. (MS) Inner quote mark (12/2003)

90 points Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark A deep plum/ruby color is accompanied by aromas and flavors of forest floor, compost, ferns, and sassafras. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, spicy, and earthy. (RP) Inner quote mark (4/2003)

K&L Notes

Calera's Reed Vineyard consists of just a little under 4.5 acres that were planted to Pinot Noir in 1975. Formerly forested, these north and northeast facing upper and lower blocks features the deepest and darkest soils with more clay, and thus fruit is slower to ripen. It was named after William (Bill) G. Reed, Sr. one of Calera's original founding partners and close friend to Josh Jenson. Reed Vineyard Pinots are typically exotically perfumed, light in body, with a soft, supple mouthfeel. The cool microclimate makes for wines with naturally fresh acidity and the structure to develop nicely with age.
