Johnnie Walker "Green Label" 15 Year Old Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1005501 94 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark This maple syrup-toned spirit is a blend of Islay and Speyside malts, with no grain whisky added. The result is an effortless mix of lightly smoky and oaky caramel notes, and a smooth, velvety feel. A splash of branchwater amps up the peat quotient. Inner quote mark (9/2011)

Whisky Advocate

Outer quote mark Just as complex as Johnnie Walker Gold, but fuller and more richly textured. (Not surprising, given that there are no grain whiskies in Johnnie Walker Green.) This is one of the finer vatted malts on the market. Its flavors are well-integrated. You’ll find creamy toffee and nougat at its core, which is then layered with notes of vanilla, mint, fresh brine, and even a hint of mustard seed. Excitingly fresh and vibrant on the finish. A whisky for both the blend and single malt drinker. (Vol. 14, #2) Inner quote mark

K&L Notes

Top Blended Whisk(e)y - 2006 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The preliminary aromas are an interesting mix of paraffin, toasted cereal and dried tobacco leaf; more minutes resting in the copita stimulate fragrances of summer grass, vegetable oil, light toffee and oak. Palate entry is off-dry and a touch toffee/nougat-like; at midpalate the oiliness/oakiness noted in the latter stages of nosing come to the fore as tastes of sweet butter, oleo margarine and black pepper vie for flavor dominance. Finishes chewy and a tad honeyed.

Surprisingly good! I have sometimes thought that the cheaper Walker bottles weren't worth their salt. Sure the Johnnie Blue has always been a pretty serious bottle but it's hardly inexpensive. This Green Label release however is seriously good! Layers of flavor, excellent mouth-filling texture, touches of sherry, spice, savory grains and toasted wood notes all very well integrated and supple. This is seriously good malt at a very economical price point.

Well well well, we've finally seen the return of the infamous Johnnie Green. I guess it wasn't until Diageo decided to discontinue it that everybody realized how freaking amazing it was. This is the most classic blended malt whisky and still represents one of the best deals in Scotch. We're talking about a blend of single malts from Diageo's top distilleries at 15 years of age. Caol Ila, Talisker, Linkwood, and Cragganmore are available as younger expressions, but they're all right around this price. Suddenly, blending them all together (without the addition of grain) at 15 years of age and they're much more affordable. I would argue that in this case the whisky is much more than simply the sum of its parts. This is why blended whisky was so popular back in the day, awesome whisky at affordable prices.

Yes, it's Johnnie Walker, but that doesn't mean it's a blended whisky! The Green label is actually a blended MALT, meaning it's comprised only of single malt whiskies from Diageo's prestigious chain of malt distilleries. Rich, creamy, supple malt flavor, brimming with fruit and soft toffee come strong on the entry. The finish shows a trace of smoke from the addition of Caol Ila to the formula, but it's never more than a whisper. Considering the size and scope of the Green's production, the quality is incredible. I'd easily drink this over a number of pure single malts in the same price range. Great stuff.
