Connoisseurs Guide
**Two Stars** This involving Merlot-based assemblage begins with deep, very well-concentrated aromas of cherries, chocolate and smoky oak, and it makes good on its promise with broad, impressively extracted flavors that keep ripe cherry fruit fixed at center stage. It is moderately full-bodied, wonderfully supple in feel and firmed by a nice bit of late-arriving tannins, and, if very tasty in its youth, it deserves to be left alone for another four or five years.

They pulled out all the stops, starting with fully ripened grapes that give huge blackberry, cassis, cherry and plum flavors. Elaborate oak adds even more sweet notes, and modern tannin management results in a very soft, elaborate mouthfeel. This stylish Merlot-Cabernet blend has lots of appeal.

Wine Spectator
Sleek and elegant, with a lively band of ripe cherry, plum and blackberry fruit, it's well-structured, with firm, earthy tannins leading to a complex, spicy aftertaste. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. (JL)

Int'l Wine Cellar
Bright red-ruby color. Smoky black fruit aromas complicated by notes of tobacco, leather, pepper and gunflint. Dense and sweet but youthful, with pliant flavors of roasted black fruits and smoky oak. Shows a slightly candied character. Finishes with big, sweet, chewy tannins and very good length. (ST)

K&L Notes
HdV is a venture between the Hyde family of Napa Valley and the de Villaine family of Burgundy (Domaine de la Romanee Conti to be exact). Most wine drinkers would assume HdV wines would have to be good, coming from such a pedigree. Well, they are in fact GREAT. 2001 is the second vintage for HdV. The red blend contains selected plots of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from Hyde Vineyards in Carneros. It shows the perfect marriage of California ripeness and exuberance with the complexity and emphasis on terroir of France.
