2000 de Viaud, Lalande-de-Pomerol

SKU #1004613

Known for their practice of holding back vintages to maturity, this small but high-quality Lalande-de-Pomerol producer crafts some best-in-class wines that are often tough to find but remarkably rewarding. De Viaud remains a family-run property of the Bielle family, and is a great reference-point for classic claret in the modern era.

Finding older vintages of Bordeaux in the value category is getting harder and harder. We were lucky to taste a few wines from this relatively unknown property 2 years ago and we bought several vintages. This wine, at twenty years old, is fantastic for the price! Our first shipment sold out in one month and we have just received our last shipment. The sweet Merlot fruit combines well with the strength of the great 2000 vintage in Bordeaux. Blackberry aromas and flavors with just a touch of toasty oak. Semi modern style--but not a full fledged Garage style. Fine acid balance and a smooth lingering finish. Enjoy now with some short ribs-can cellar well for a few more years.

After making a run a few years ago on the brilliant '98, we've been looking for more De Viaud with little luck. So it was much to our surprise when we stumbled upon not only another terrific value, but from the famed 2000 vintage. This is perfectly mature at 20 years old, but still has freshness and lift. Aromas of currant, sage, and plum keep you coming back to the glass, where the palate has notes of strawberry, licorice, and a slight forest floor note, adding some depth and complexity. It'll be hard to find another 2000 Bordeaux of this caliber for the price at age 20.
