2000 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien

SKU #1003111 100 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark A classic Las Cases with masses of mineral, floral and blueberry character. Full and chewy, with so much power. It’s just opening now. Inner quote mark (4/2014)

Outer quote mark Absolutely fantastic. This is one of the most exciting young reds I have tasted in a long, long time. It shows intense aromas of berries, currants and minerals, with hints of mint. Full-bodied and packed with fruit and tannins, its long finish is refined and silky. A benchmark for the vintage. Las Cases has always wanted to make first-growth quality in a top-notch vintage, and it certainly did in 2000. *Collectibles - Ranked No. 5 on Top 100 of 2003* (JS) Inner quote mark (3/2003)

Outer quote mark The 2000 Leoville Las Cases is another brilliant wine and, like most 2000s, appears to just now be at the early stages of its drink window. Smoky black fruits, crushed rocks, lead pencil, and menthol notes all emerge from this brilliant, blockbuster beauty that still tastes like it's just 5-6 years old. Beautifully concentrated, ripe, sexy, and seamless, it has the classic elegance and regal quality of this domaine front and center. It has another 3-4 decades of longevity. Inner quote mark

Outer quote mark 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 9% Merlot. An authentic expression of Las Cases, with its powerful Pauillac-meets-St-Julien character. Tight black fruit dominates, then tobacco, graphite, undergrowth and cedar. The tertiary notes float and hover, then the layers come. (JA) Inner quote mark (9/2017)

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Tasted blind as a vintage comparison at the Valandraud vertical, the 2000 Leoville-Las-Cases is a quite fabulous, magisterial Saint Julien that is only just beginning to flex its muscles. It has a very intense and beautifully defined bouquet with mineral rich blackberry and bilberry scents, outstanding focus and harmony, and very well-integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, impressive backbone and focus in situ. There is a touch of mint infusing the fruit here, superb tension with a touch of mulberry and Hoi Sin lingering on the finish that still feels backward and sinewy. What was remarkable was to observe the melioration in the glass, achieving wondrous energy and delineation with time, still improving after a couple of hours. Buy it, cellar it, drink it. 95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Full, bright ruby. Superripe aromas of roasted currant, violet and black licorice. Powerful and highly aromatic in the mouth, with brooding black fruit, violet and chocolate flavors. A step up in acidity from the Clos du Marquis, giving the wine great vinosity and cut. Extremely long and aromatic on the finish, with big, chewy, thoroughly ripe tannins. Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Dark black cherry colour. Oaky and spicy up front. Peppery spice. A little bit of leafy freshness but bags of generous fruit. Slight dustiness. Rich, smooth and dry minerality over rich deep, sweet fruit. Firm chocolate-textured tannins. Bold but not brash. Still quite a bit of oak spice. Not giving itself yet. Powerful. Maybe could drink it sooner with food. Very dense and Cabernet-dominated (77%). 18/20 points (JH) Inner quote mark (2/2011)
