1999 Canon-La Gaffelière, St-Emilion

SKU #1002102 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Canon La Gaffeliere's opaque purple-colored 1999 is a strong effort for this vintage. It displays a sweet nose of pain grille, smoke, meats, graphite, blackberry, and cassis liqueur. The wine is full-bodied, deep, powerful, and rich, with sweet tannin and low acidity. This is a blockbuster effort for a delicate vintage such as 1999. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2016. (4/2002)

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Good medium ruby. Aromas of plum, currant, game and leather. Silky-sweet and aromatic in the mouth, with lovely vinosity to frame the expressive flavors of roasted plum, currant, black cherry, minerals and dark chocolate. Firmly structured but quite suave, with fine tannins and very good length. Impressive for the vintage. (6/2002)

90 points Wine Spectator

Offers opulent aromas of decadent fruit and raisin, with dark chocolate and dried flowers. Full-bodied, featuring a decadent fruit character and superpolished tannins. A joy to drink.—'89/'99 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2009). Drink now. (Web-2010)

K&L Notes

This has nice forward, sweet fruit with exotic Asian spice flavors. Deep color. Definitely going to be ready earlier than the 1998.

If you're looking for a bottle of Bordeaux to drink right now, this delivers with some decanting. Notes of fresh-roasted coffee, orange zest, spice and mesquite complement a palate packed with gamey black fruit, espresso and tobacco notes on the finish.

Intense and lavish aromatics of cassis, cocoa, smokey mesquite BBQ, meat and bacon as well. It is rich, it is lush, the fruit quite sweet, yet it has structure and balance. Really quite delicious.

Additional Information:

- A very popular red grape variety found in the great wines of St. Emilion and Pomerol. It is the most planted variety in Bordeaux, and it has also become an extremely fashionable red in many regions including California. Although it has a reputation to be smooth, and easy to drink when young, Merlot is also capable of producing extremely intense wines as well. It is often used as a blending agent with Cabernet Sauvignon.

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
