2007 Salvatore Molettieri "Vigna Cinque Querce" Taurasi

SKU #1559487 93 points Decanter

Outer quote mark At 15 years of age, there’s barely a whiff of evolution in a wine made from vines in Montemarano on calcareous clay soils at 550m, whose fine fragrance is followed by a delicious black cherry fruitiness etched with an incisive, almost saline acidity. The altitude and soils, combined with ageing for up to 60 months in barrel for a remarkable roundness of texture, appear to be the keys to its gradual evolution, showing the potential of Aglianico to age well when the primary fruit is as good as this. Outer quote mark Molettieri's 2007 Taurasi Vigna 5 Querce is a big, big wine. Mocha, espresso, game, tar, licorice and dark raspberries meld together in an unusually ripe, flashy Taurasi. The 2007 boasts tons of richness and sheer power, but it needs at least another year to settle down and incorporate its oak. Unlike most Molettieri Taurasis, the 2007 should drink well with minium cellaring. (AG) Inner quote mark (2/2013)

Outer quote mark The 2007 Taurasi Vigna Cinque Querce is sitting pretty in its drinking window, boasting a seductive display of black cherries in an air of exotic spice and crushed stone with lifting hints of sage and menthol. It’s soft and enveloping yet pure and precise, with dried red berries contrasted by sour citrus and nervous acidity. Rosy inner florals linger through the long and wonderfully fresh finale, with only hints of fine tannin that frame the experience nicely. Make sure to give the 2007 some time open-in-bottle, or decanter to fully express itself. (EG) Inner quote mark (1/2022)

Outer quote mark Wild underbrush and exotic spice notes mark the racy black cherry puree and cassis fruit in this rich red, delivering full tannins and a long aftertaste of wild flowers, mineral and spice. (NM) Inner quote mark (6/2013)

Aged Aglianico? Hell yes. What an intriguing wine that is completely off the radar. The nose brilliantly showcases aged character with leather, cola, savory notes and botanicals. On the palate, the harsh tannic profile I typically associate with the variety is softened with the blueberry and blackberry fruits moving to the fore. The fruit profile here is in the constellation of Petite Syrah, Petite Verdot or Alicante, but it has an indescribable distinctive Italian character that makes it all its own. Finally, the aged quality of the fruit gives this wine depth and complexity; this is incredibly unique. I can’t say I’ve had anything like this before and I absolutely love it.
