Mini-Vertical from One of Vosne-Romanée's Greatest 1er Crus - 08/05/2023 - Red Burgundy
Grand Cru-Caliber Vertical from Vosne-Romanée's Best 1er Cru
It's rare to see one vintage of Vosne-Romanée’s top 1er Cru, Les Suchots, available in quantity, yet today we have a spectacular vertical of three stellar vintages from Burgundy visionary Nicolas Potel's Domaine de Bellene. This in-demand premier cru sits in the midst of a trio of Burgundy’s greatest grands crus—Richebourg, Romanée-St-Vivant, and Echezeaux—making it an attractive value to serious connoisseurs. Potel’s Suchots, sourced from nearly 90-year-old vines, embodies the fragrance, intensity, transparency, and supple grace that makes Vosne-Romanée a collector's favorite the world over.

Wine Enthusiast:
"Properly structured and with solid tannins, this is a concentrated wine. Its firm texture is balanced by ripe black fruits, dark and intense. From a vineyard surrounded by some of Burgundy's greatest, this superb wine needs many years. Drink from 2026. (RV)" (02/2018) 91 points
Burghound:
"ike the Grèves, there is just enough volatile acidity to warrant mentioning on the ultra-spicy nose of various dark berries, plum and pretty floral notes. The suave, round and exceptionally rich medium weight plus flavors are very Vosne in character before culminating in a palate coating, robust and well-balanced finish. This is very clearly built-to-age and as I have mentioned in several of the above reviews, my only concern revolves around the VA. This is to say that at present it's no more than a nit but it's impossible to say how it will progress, if at all, with time in bottle. As such my score offers the benefit of the doubt that the VA will remain a background element." (04/2017)

Wine Advocate:
"The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots, matured in 100% new oak with 100% whole bunch, has a lovely bouquet with floral, rose petal scents waltzing with redcurrant and raspberry fruit. I love the delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe red berry fruit, veins of blueberry and cassis that dovetail into quite a structured, almost Malconsorts-like finish. Great potential. (NM)" (12/2017) 94 points
Wine Enthusiast:
"Touching the hallowed ground of some of Burgundy's greatest vineyards, Les Suchots shares reflected glory. In this wine, great swathes of ripe black-cherry flavors gain extra intensity from the structure and smoky wood-aging character. Drink from 2025. (RV)" (02/2019) 93 points
Wine & Spirits:
"Nicolas Potel established this domaine with the help of a number of growers who wanted to lease their land. He started around Beaune, including a parcel in Beaune-Grèves where vines planted in 1904 provided a resource for his massal selections. By 2009, he had added parcels in the Côte de Nuits, including this 0.53-acre plot in Vosne-Romanée, planted in 1937. He often includes whole bunches in his red-wine fermentations, but does not use any additions in the winery, other than small amounts of sulfur. His 2016 Les Suchots is classical, speaking elegance to Vosnes detailed tannic power. The fruit is fragrant, transparent and pure, creating a delicate tension with the tannins while completely saturating them. This has the structure and freshness to develop for a decade or more." (04/2019) 92 points
Wine Spectator:
"Luscious cherry, spice and subtle mineral flavors mark this dense red. Broad, with dusty tannins lending support and giving this the potential for aging. Shows fine balance, yet this needs time to find equilibrium. Best from 2022 through 2038." (11/2019)

Wine & Spirits:
"Potels domaine includes just over half an acre of vines in Les Suchots, dating to 1937, a parcel he describes as neighboring Romanée St-Vivant. More than 80 years on, those vines produced fruit with the cherries-in-heaven character of a grand cru, the wines depths and fragrant complexities delivered with the cool of late-fifties jazz. Vibrant, youthfully tannic and tight, this is a 2019 to treasure in your cellar." (04/2022) 94 points
Wine Enthusiast:
"Sourced from old vines planted in 1937 in a plot adjacent to La Romanée Saint Vivant, this powerfully ripe, deeply fruity red pulsates with roasted black-plum and cassis flavors. Matured in 50% new oak, it's rounded and spicy, muted by accents of cinnamon, char and leather. A slightly warming, muscular wine with tannins that are tight in youth, it should hit peak from 2025 and improve through 2035. (AI)" (02/2020) 93 points
Burghound:
" Once again there is just enough reduction to push what appears to be notably ripe fruit to the background. There is a lovely inner mouth perfume to the finer but not denser medium weight flavors that possess a supple mid-palate mouthfeel, all wrapped in a long, sappy and complex finale that really tightens up as it sits on the palate. This is very clearly built for the longer haul and patience strongly advised here as well. Worth considering if you have the discipline to buy it and forget it. *Burghound Sweet Spot Outstanding!*" (04/2020) 90-92 points
Vinous:
"The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru offers kirsch, touches of cranberry and blood orange and lovely floral tones on the well-defined nose. The palate is balanced with supple tannins and just a little chewiness on the entry, leading to a compact finish that needs a bit of precision and delineation. Not bad, but I hope to see more refinement with age. (NM)" (12/2020) |
