A Pair of Classic White Burgundies for Under $22 - Outstanding DI Value - 03/08/2018 - White Burgundy

It’s no secret that the prices for Burgundy have risen dramatically over the years, which is why our buying team has made it a special focus to track down those hidden values that not only deliver a classic Burgundy profile, but do so affordably. The district of Pouilly-Fuissé has proven to be a hotbed of remarkable finds that fit this criteria perfectly. Featured here are a pair of 2016s gems from Domaine Renaud and Château Vitallis. Both offer excellent fleshy orchard fruit flavors and the racy acidity that’s the hallmark of any good white Burgundy. Unlike the Chardonnays coming from the Côte-d'Or, this pair isn’t priced in the stratosphere and can be had for under $22. By working directly with these under-the-radar estates, we are able to pass on significant savings making them among the best white Burgundy buys you’ll find anywhere. While crops were down in 2016, the quality of the wines are absolutely brilliant. As is evidenced in this pair, the 2016s reveal a crystalline purity and unmistakable freshness. They are easy-going enough to enjoy as a weeknight pour, but also have the body and structure to pair with a special meal. Not only have they quickly become staff favorites, but they also earned strong points and press. It’s not often that you can satisfy your Burgundy fix for under $30, but these ‘16s proven that it’s still possible.

2016 Château Vitallis Pouilly-Fuissé "Les Vignes du Chateau" ($21.99)

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "A beautifully ripe wine, this is textured and packed with fruit at the same time. It shows a classic mineral character of Pouilly-Fuissé along with generous yellow and citrus fruitiness. Produced by the Dutron family, who have been growers since the 19th century, this wine could age. *editor's choice* (RV)" (02/2018)

Wine Spectator: "There is ample richness and fruit here, aligned with a racy profile. Apple, melon, lemon and mineral flavors unravel through the long finish. Drink now through 2021" (02/2017)

Decanter: "Fresh, waxy lemon rind aromas, with a peppery hinth. The palate is fleshy and open, with soft apricot, minerals, and oak-influenced spice.Drinking Window 2018 - 2020.(PT)" (02/2018)

K&L Notes: There are still treasures to be found in the Mâcon, where small producers fly under the radar. One such gem is Château Vitallis. In classic Burgundian fashion, the Dutron family has been growing vines since 1835, and now owns some of the oldest and best parcels in the village of Fuissé in the Pouilly-Fuissé district. Our buyers happened upon the château during a trip to Burgundy a few years ago, and it was quite evident upon their return that they’d found something special. Perhaps it was the haste with which the samples were chilled and opened, or the irrepressible smiles, but this was evidently a good breakthrough for our Burgundy buying team. In the glass, the wines live up to the hype: subtle, like any good white Burgundy, but complex, mineral-driven and poised. Natural yeast fermentation, aged on the lees, with 70% in stainless steel tanks and 30% in French oak.

A fantastic Burgundy value, the Les Vignes du Chateau delivers exactly what you want out of a fine Pouilly Fuisse. There's a wonderful balance of ripe, soft stone fruit notes, subtle aromas of barrel toast and vanilla and lemon zest like citrus. A wonderfully elegant weeknight wine!

Of the 2016s, this one is a favorite. The nose is utterly gorgeous with white flowers, white nectarine and freshly peeled orange and lemon rinds jumping out of the glass. On the palate it is racy and vibrant with pure fruit freshness and great length. The texture is not as opulent than the Vielles Vignes or Les Perrieres but the flavor concentration is powerful and balanced.

A classic Burgundy in every way. It is broad, with its richness of fruit perfectly balanced by its minerality and oak spice notes. Very nice with broiled lobster tails.

Chateau Vitallis is located in the heart of Fuisse with numerous vineyard holdings and vines with an average age of 35-75 years they have great raw materials at their disposal. The 2016 Pouilly-Fuisse "Vignes du Chateau" is a fantastic wine with beautiful notes of stone fruit and golden delicious apples on the nose with a richly-textured palate of orchard fruits and mineral notes. A classic Pouilly-Fuisse that deserves your attention.

Here's a total bargain! If you are a fan of richer style chardonnay, this Pouilly Fuisse is a great example of that approach. The wine offers a warm toasted oak character that is paralleled in perfect harmony with lemon-like acidity. The palate shows nice volume and with flavors of minerals and citrus fruits. Recommended!

2016 Domaine Renaud Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes ($21.99)

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "This rich wine is dense and concentrated, with beautiful apple and spice flavors lifted by acidity. The fruit and the minerality typical of the appellation give this wine both its fine texture and its tangy fruitiness. Drink from 2018." (11/2017)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Pouilly Fuisse Vieilles Vignes, from vines between 55 and 80 years old, has an attractive, quite strict bouquet with citrus lemon and apple blossom aromas, an underlying mineralité coming through with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, focused and tensile with quite a persistent citrus finish. This is a well-crafted, fresh and vibrant Pouilly-Fuissé. (NM)" (08/2017)

K&L Notes: Domaine Renaud is a small operation, making Mâcon, Pouilly-Fuissé and St. Veran from 12 hectares of estate vineyards. Their cellar is modern, and they use upright ovals for many of the wines, and stainless steel for others. This value is a great alternative to California Chardonnay and an entry into white Burgundy.

What sets this Pouilly Fuisse apart from our other selections is the beautiful acidity. It has generous, golden apple and pear flavors with baking spices, as well. The finish lingers and the bright minerality comes forward for a super strong, amd memorable, finish.

A perfect introduction to white Burgundy and one of my favorite Direct Imports, the Pouilly Fuisse from Domaine Renaud is kept fresh by utilizing stainless steel for the wines maturation and fermentation. Notes of yellow plum and citrus are complemented by crisp acidity and fresh mineral notes. Wonderful as a party wine or with white meats such as turkey and chicken.

This was rather a pleasant surprise for me! In the past wines of Renaud from Pouilly-Fuisse were rich and on the heavier side. But this 2016 vintage is totally different. wine still has lovely weight of the fruit but there is no pronounced oak and texture is bright and fresh with crisp acidity that sparkles from start to finish. Such a delight!
