“Impressive” 93-Point, Sub-$15 South American Red - 02/26/2018 - Argentina

Our never ending search for outstanding wine values has turned up an impressive red from Argentina’s Uco Valley. The 93-point, 2014 Benmarco Malbec is sourced from elevations of 3300 feet, which translates into a wine that offers not only bold, expressive dark fruit flavors, but also an enticing minerality that adds excellent definition and structure. Further accented by elegant floral tones and exotic spice, this sub-$15 red soars above its modest price. For those who love fruit-driven wines, this gorgeous 2014 hits it right on the money. The critics agree with our assessment, awarding big points and high praise that normally reserved for wines twice the price. We’ve been working with the Benmarco label for several years now, and we can say it is one of the best we’ve had from Susana Balbo's impressive stable of wines. Whether you are looking for your next house red, or have a gathering planned, this delightful Malbec will most certainly fit the bill.

2014 Benmarco Malbec Uco Valley ($14.99)

93 points James Suckling: "A savory and juicy wine with blackberry and dark chocolate character. Full body, velvety tannins and a delicious finish. Rich tannin texture gives linear definition." (05/2016)

91 points Decanter: "Bright and floral on the nose, this has youthful dark fruit as well as prunes and earthy tones. Lean and fine textured in the mouth. The fruit is a little sweet but there are nice ripe strawberry flavours and a flower laden finish."

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As it was the case with the 2013, the 2014 Benmarco Malbec was produced with grapes from vineyards in Los Chacayes in the Valle de Uco and produced with as little intervention as possible, following the ideas of vineyard manager Edgardo del Popolo. The bunches were manually sorted, destemmed softly and the grapes fermented with daily pigeage with a maceration of 20 days. It matured in used French oak barrels for one year. There are notes of ripe plums and dark cherries, with a fresher palate and fine tannins, good balance and a dry, mineral finish. The riper notes turned more floral with time in the glass. It's an impressive 2014, especially for the price. (LG) 90+" (12/2016)

K&L Notes: Another label from Susana Balbo's Dominio del Plata, Benmarco makes excellent value Malbec and Cabernet based wines. The Malbec comes from Los Chacayes in Argentina's Uco Valley, and is steered by the terroir insights and winemaking know how of one of Argentina's foremost experts in Edy del Popolo.

I drank this with a friend recently and it made me wonder why I don't drink Malbec more often. Plummy and dark-fruited with notes of chocolate and earth this is not overly fruity and lacks any aggressive tannic edge. This is very smooth and (too) easy to drink. Great value Malbec that shows more finesse than many in this price range.

One of my favorite go-to Malbecs! Great black and blue fruits, fresh floral bouquet of violets and just a hint of minerality. Super smooth with just the right amount of acidity and tannins. Perfect whisper of oak from a year in neutral barrels. This is such a slam dunk with any grilled meat or BBQ!!

This is more than just a great value red. It is an affordable introduction to mountain fruit wine. Now, we can say that about most Mendoza wine, but this behaves like mountain wine from other regions in the world for a 5th of the price. From the heights of Los Chacayes in the Uco Valley at 3300 feet with alluvial soils are made up of rocks, sand, silt, and limestone. Its elevation and soils are definitely translated into this wine, I wish that could be said about wines from other mountainous regions, but I digress. This wine has lifted aromatics; focused berry, floral tones, and minerality. The palate is structured but not oppressive, this is a wine for tonight, not a decade from now. The flavors are more complex than the nose and enhanced with soft tannins and fresh acidity. A wine that was made to be drunk with gusto but also has a story to tell.

The quality and elegance on display in this Malbec had me guessing it was MUCH more expensive. It showed very supple, rich blue and black fruit with a balancing freshness from notes of minty herbs and black licorice. Structure is on point with graceful acidity and texturally ripe tannins. A great example of why South American Malbecs are the world's most famous.

The folks at Benmarco have delivered another brooding, powerhouse Malbec in 2014! This full bodied, dark, potent Malbec has slick tobacco like oak and rich black fruit. If you like powerful Napa Cabernet, but are tired of paying the exorbitant prices, this is a great alternative.

We have been carrying this label for quite a while now and it has always been one of those reliable "go to" wines that pretty much everyone likes. Lush nose of boysenberry and blackberry, with a slight herbal note. Also lush and full on the palate with dark berry and black cherry fruit. Nice, clean, mineral laden finish that is a surprise. I have come to expect nothing less from Susana Balbo. Both this series and her own "Susana Balbo" line have always been outstanding.

I can see why this earned the trifecta of solid reviews: there is simply a lot to like in this vintage of Benmarco. While the wine does not disappoint fans of Malbec and fans of fruit-forward wines with its rich, forward and plummy fruit, there is more going on than initially meets the palate. Iron-like minerality, pleasant spice, and very well integrated oak round out the palate with complexity and appealing style. A tasty value Malbec that's ready to drink!
