A Historic 2013 95-Point Cab, Parker Calls “One of the Great All-Time Cabernet Sauvignons from Sonoma” - 02/23/2018 - Cabernet Sauvignon (domestic)

There are a handful of occasions where the wine press does our work for us. The utterly stunning 2013 Louis M. Martini "Monte Rosso Vineyard" Cab is one such occasion. With Robert Parker awarding 95 points and calling it “one of the great all-time Cabernet Sauvignons from Sonoma,” we can pretty much sit back and let this well deserved praise do its work. For those who have been following the work at Louis Martini of late, Parker’s adoring accolades should come as no surprise. The team at Martini has been at the top of their game the last few years, so when they were graced with a vintage of a lifetime they ran with it. As the reviews and tasting notes below illustrate, this blockbuster bottling offers everything one could hope for in a California Cab and more. Deep, rich, with tons of fruit which it delivers with unparalleled intensity, it the kind of wine that has you coming back to the glass again and again. As Parker notes in his review, Northern California Cabs increasingly come at a premium, so finding a plum pick like this one for under $65 is downright amazing. Go ahead and pop the cork on this amazing 2013 now or cellar for another 15-plus years, either way you’ll be delighted. At this price, a case purchased is definitely recommended.

2013 Louis M. Martini "Monte Rosso Vineyard" Moon Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon ($64.95)

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An absolutely outrageous wine and probably one of the great all-time Cabernet Sauvignons from Sonoma is the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Rosso Vineyard Sonoma Valley. This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the relatively recent Moon Mountain AVA, that aged for 27 months in 67% new French and 14 % new American oak. This is a wine of thrilling levels of intensity, with an incredible fragrance of spring flowers, blue fruits, black fruits, especially crème de cassis and blackberry, loamy soil undertones, and a touch of licorice and smoke. The wine is full-bodied, with magnificent fruit intensity and purity, loads of glycerin (15.5% alcohol) and a finish of a good 40+ seconds. This is a great bottle of wine that can still be purchased for less than $100.00, which is increasingly rare in Northern California. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2040. 95+ points. It is hard to believe that the iconic Louis M. Martini Winery first made Napa Cabernet Sauvignon in 1933. Louis Martini is long gone, but he played a significant role in establishing Napa and Sonoma valleys as premium grape-growing regions. His family has carried on and more recently benefitted from the influx of significant investment from the new owners - the Gallos. (RP)" (10/2016)

94 points Wine Spectator: "An immense wine, deep and rich in extraction, offering bold flavors of dark currant, blackberry, black licorice, mocha, cedar, loamy earth and exotic spices, all carried with ease and grace by the texture. The tannins, though potent, are ripe and woven into the fabric. (JL)" (05/2017)

92 points Vinous: "The 2013 Monte Rosso Vineyard Mountain Red exudes depth, power and richness. Even so, the mountain tannins from this famed mountain site are relatively tame, which gives the wine plenty of near and medium term appeal. Plum, espresso, spice, licorice and rose petal all build into the soft, open-knit finish. The 2013 is accessible today, but it also has plenty of substance lurking beneath. (AG)" (08/2017)

K&L Notes: Winemaker's Notes: "The Cabernet grapes for this wine were carefully hand harvested and hand sorted, then cold soaked for up to three days before being gravity fed into 3.5 ton and 7-ton open top fermenters. After primary fermentation, free run juice was drained and the must gently pressed in a 5-ton basket press. The wine was racked by gravity into oak barrels for malolactic fermentation, then aged in separate lots for up to 26 months in French and American oak barrels (72% new French, 16% new American, 12% neutral barrels). The final blend was assembled, then sent back to barrel to allow the flavors to integrate before bottling."

This is a classic, powerful Cabernet for the ages! There is no mistaking this wine for anything other than what it is: Monte Rosso vineyard royalty. Faint whiffs of roasted Pablano pepper intermingle with clean, bright mint and maple leaf lead to an ample palate rife with cassis, blueberry, black cherry and macerated plum, tempered by spicy sweet star anise and dark cocoa. An intense, persistent rocky minerality is the hallmark of this wine and a signature of the high elevation Monte Rosso vineyard, which is known for producing fruit with great acidity and wonderful cellar potential.

A huge monolithic wine with immense dark fruit saturation, graphite, obsidian like minerality and structure to last a lifetime. This wine really highlights the sheer power and intensity that the ancient Monte Rosso vineyard can impart. Having highlighted the wine's powerful stature I should also note that it has impeccable balance and is very well proportioned. For what this wine represents and the quality in the bottle the value is just unfathomable...but we'll take it!

This is a gorgeous Cabernet that definitely deserves all the praise it has received. Louis Martini's Monte Rosso Vineyard lies in the Mayacamas Mountains and is named for its rich, red volcanic soil. This 100% Cabernet is dense and concentrated, but has a lovely softness that provides balance and finesse. Black cherry, dark chocolate, sandalwood and spice are expressed on the nose and palate with well-integrated oak. This intense Cabernet will have a long life ahead of it.
