New Release - 100-Point Único 2006, plus In Stock 2005 & Reserva Especial - 02/17/2018 - Spain

The 2006 Vega Sicilia Único was recently released and we have allocations available at the lowest price in the country. Garnering a perfect mark from Suckling and 98 points from the Wine Advocate, our parcel of this flagship bottling won’t be around for long – so act swiftly to lock-in your share.

This “could very well be the finest vintage of the 21st century…” according to the Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutierrez. Today’s release stands among the best ever from this iconic estate and is quite simply a must-have for any collector of Spain’s elite bottlings.

Also, available and in stock, is the 97-point, 2005 vintage of Único as well as the 2012 release of the Reserva Especial. Both these bottlings were an instant hit with the critics and stand among the best from this illustrious estate. Both are done up in an expressive style with bright aromatics and plush fruit and can be enjoyed in the near term or cellared away for decades. Like the 2006, they are cornerstones for any Spanish collection.

2006 Vega Sicilia "Unico" Ribera del Duero (Pre-Arrival) - 12 available ($369.99)

100 points James Suckling: "Incredibly floral and beautiful with dark berry, spice, cedar and mint. Chinese plums. Asian spices. Bark. Tea. Full body, dense and so soft and complex. The finish goes on for minutes. Endless and fine. January 2017 release. This reminds me of the gorgeous 1991 or 1964. Drink forever. A wine that you want to spend time with." (01/2018)

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I tasted the 2006 Único again, and it's clearly the best Único produced in the last few years, to which I don't find much logic, as on paper 2004 and 2005 were better years in Ribera del Duero. However it is, the 2006 is a fantastic modern Vega Sicilia in the making, powerful and clean, still very young and marked by the élevage with a whiff of American oak and a creamy texture in the palate. It should age very well for a very long time. I'd wait to pull the cork, even if it's drinkable and quite showy already. This is the current vintage in 2018, even if the 2007 and 2008 were released before it and even before the 2005. (LG)" (08/2018)

95 points Decanter: "From vines averaging 35 years of age across 40 hectares, Único undergoes a minimum 10 year ageing process in both small and large American and French oak barrels, plus time in bottle. After a while in the glass the aromatic profile grows, charming with redcurrants, roses, and fine oak. In the mouth it lives up to its 'Unique' name. The depth of flavour impresses, and so too does the complex layering. Mineral, chalk, red fruit, wood smoke and fresh herbs - theres so much to discover, and all of these characteristics are building materials for the future, along with the very bright line of freshness. Very promising. (MJE)" (12/2017)

2005 Vega Sicilia "Unico" Ribera del Duero ($299.99)

97 points Vinous: "Saturated ruby. Explosively perfumed aromas of fresh ripe red fruits, floral oils, pipe tobacco and incense take on sexy vanilla and woodsmoke nuances as the wine opens up. Densely packed yet shockingly lithe on the palate, offering intense cherry liqueur, red currant and spicecake flavors given spine by a core of juicy acidity. Shows superb energy and clarity, finishing sweet, smoky and extremely long; velvety tannins add gentle grip. (JR)" (05/2017)

96 points Wine & Spirits: "The N-122 runs like a spine across Ribera del Duero from east to west, separating the Vega Sicilia winery from the Unico vineyards across the road. Those vineyards face north, on undulating slopes rich in chalk, and give wines that can live for decades. Thats the case for this 2005. The concentration of this vintage was so great that Vega Sicilia held the bottles back an extra couple of years; now, that patience has been rewarded with a beautiful, enchanting complexity of aromas and flavors that encompass earth, spice, roses, black fruits and minerals. It still feels tense and energetic, a lively, radiant Unico that will continue to develop for at least a decade in bottle--even though now, sitting in front of a half-empty glass, it is difficult to imagine how it can be better. It can." (06/2017)

96 points John Gilman: "The new release of 2005 Vega Sicilia Único is an absolutely stunning wine in the making, with great depth, precision and vibrancy that augurs very well for its positive evolution in bottle. The bouquet is very pure and still quite primary, wafting from the glass in a nascently complex constellation of black cherries, black plums, Montecristos, raw cocoa, a complex base of soil tones and a masterful base of smoky, gently spicy new oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and utterly seamless, with superb depth at the core, impeccable focus and balance and a very long, ripely tannic and youthful finish. This vintage of Único seems to be cut from the same cloth as the more elegant legendary years like 1970 and 1985, but it is still a very young wine and needs at least another decade in the cellar to start to blossom and drink with conviction. (Drink between 2027-2085) 96+" (03/2017)

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Neal Martin had already tasted the 2005 Único in 2012, before I joined The Wine Advocate, but then they released 2007 and 2008 before and the 2005 has been kept until now, as they thought the vintage required some more time in bottle. It's mostly Tempranillo with some 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak vats and aged for almost six years in 225-liter French and American oak barrels and 20,000-liter oak vats. The extra time in bottle has helped the wine to develop its bouquet, and it feels very aromatic and open, with the classical Vega Sicilia perfume of yesteryear, earthy, leafy and spicy, even if they wine was kept because of its power. It's still powerful, but at the same time it's elegant and has a polished mouthfeel and fine-grained tannins. 93,545 bottles, 2,391 magnums, 146 double magnums and six imperials produced. It was bottled in June 2011. Next year they will release the 2006, and the following vintage to be released in 2019, will be 2009. Further than that they don't know, as the only newer vintage in bottle today is 2010 and they are about to bottle 2011 now. (LG)" (02/2017)

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Earthy, spicy plum and berry aromas here suggest full ripeness. Tight, scratchy tannins lend the otherwise soft and ripe palate some grip. Lightly oaked flavors of tobacco, dried cherry and raspberry grow more chocolaty and raisiny on the finish. This is an Unico to drink over the next dozen years. *Editor's Choice* (MS)" (06/2018)

95 points Wine Spectator: "This polished red offers flavors of tobacco, cedar and leather, with a core of cherry and tea. Firm tannins support the thick, smooth texture, while lively acidity keeps this balanced. Harmonious and long. *Collectables* (TM)" (06/2017)

94 points Decanter: "Único is the Vega Sicilia classic, famously built to last, but this vintage is remarkably approachable already. Aromas of truffle and forest floor introduce a bright and warm palate of red berry fruits, lifted by a tangerine acidity and a fine, mineral finish. The 12 years of ageing have achieved smooth and supple tannins that are well integrated. This is not destined to be the most long-lived of Únicos, but is full of pleasure now. 94% Tinto Fino, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. This spent six years in French and American oak, both new and used barrels, and 20,000 litre vats. (JE)" (01/2017)

94 points James Suckling: "Lots of ripe fruit and layers. Very polished. Pretty density and freshness. Rich and flavorful yet a little loosely knit. Incense, hints of vanilla and flowers. Tight still." (07/2017)

Jancis Robinson: "All new oak. Deep leathery garnet with bricky rim. Sweet and leathery on the nose. A hint of undergrowth but still has a surprising amount of fruit. Super-sweet in its fruit and gentle decay, with finest of tannins, just a very fine grain, and that leathery finish. Theres a firm grip even though the tannins are resolved. Deep and firm and incredibly long. Still very much a promise though delicious now. So long. A little more earthy and less elegant than the Reserva Especial and more muscular. 18/20 points (JH)" (12/2016)

The 2005 Vega Sicilia is an awe inspiring wine that ranks up with the finest bottles in the world. I was blown away by the kaleidoscopic complexity of this perfectly textured, medium to full bodied red. Most of the time, wines with a reputation as great as this can only disappoint, but this over delivered. This will be at home on the table with the best and most expensive wines that the world has to offer, and drinks fabulously now with the promise of generations of enjoyment to come!

K&L Notes: The original first growth of Spain, Vega Sicilia was once again in excellent form in the strong 2005 Ribera del Duero vintage. In fact, the winery believed that the wine required additional time in bottle and so it released the 2007 and 2008 vintages ahead of the powerful 2005. A modern day classic, perhaps even something of a throwback, the 2005 Vega Sicilia promises a terrific and long life in bottle. PLEASE NOTE: This product is 3 bottles in its Original Wooden Case (OWC), sold only as a 3-bottle case to protect ideal provenance. Vega Sicilia "Único" Ribera del Duero Reserva Especial (2012 release) - 11 available ($349.99)

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Bodegas Vega Sicilia remains a benchmark for the worlds great red wines. The Valbuena bottling receives 3 years in barrel and 2 years in bottle prior to release. On the occasion of my visit in May 2010, the three Reserva Especials already in bottle and awaiting release were tasted side by side. They are identified (for the purposes of this review only) as the 2013 Release, the 2012 Release, and the 2011 Release. I was not told what vintages are in each bottling but it actually makes little difference. The Reserva Especials are blended to a house style designed to reflect Vega Sicilia at its very best. The vagaries of vintage (as reflected in Unico) are blended away leaving a wine that is, in my opinion, better than any of the single vintage wines with the possible exception of the 1942. (JM)" (06/2012)
