Amazing Value: A New Direct Import Rioja for under $12 - 02/14/2018 - Spain

Sometimes, our best direct import deals go unnoticed. Such is the case with this delicious DI Rioja, a wine which immediately jumps to top value status. For well under $15, what we have here is an honest, authentic Rioja, made with 100% estate grown fruit, including mature vine Tempranillo and some relatively younger vine Graciano adding brightness, mid-palate fruit and Riojano typicity. Jesús Madrazo, a formidable talent known for his work at Contino (whose wines start at $40 and go up from there) consulted and helped to blend this wine, certainly another factor in its extraordinarily high quality for the price. Recognized as a top value under $20 in Food & Wine magazine's September 2017 Spain issue, Castillo de Vinas is one one of our favorite reds in the shop right now. This is a weeknight value that you don't need to overthink - buy a case and enjoy!

2014 Castillo de Viñas Crianza Rioja ($11.99)

Our newest direct-import Rioja comes from Rioja Baja, where the climate is a bit warmer and more Mediterranean, but where the Garnacha is arguably the best in all Rioja, the Graciano ripens more easily and shows great promise, and Tempranillo, planted on choice parcels like they are here, is also quite good. Castillo de Viñas was a label put together for us by one of our contacts in Rioja, and is made by the Burgo Viejo winery, a group of growers who have some great quality vineyards in the area. 90% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano. Juicy red and mixed berry fruit, with some gentle spiciness and toast, make for a Rioja that is plenty authentic, easy drinking and tough to beat for the price.

A blend of Tempranillo and Graciano, this 2014 Crianza shows loads of delicious red fruit character and intensity for under $12. Our newest Rioja DI, Castillo de Vinas has Tempranillo and Graciano situated on prime, stony higher elevation terroir in the Rioja Baja, the result being a wine with loads of richness and character. Highly recommended.

This is wine is a real value that delivers what it should and more . It is a medium bodied and dry with nice dark fruit and subtle earthy flavors. It will go well with pork and chicken dishes. A good example of an easy to drink Crianza Rioja.

This is a phenomenal deal in Crianza from a new producer in our portfolio! Clean, polished, and modern in style, this Crianza bottling has all the elements required in a favorite weekday red! The fruit is round, accessible and pleasant without being jammy or flabby. Likewise, the structure is just soft enough to allow for near-term drinking, without compromising any integrity or balance. Overall, a great deal, and a new K&L favorite!
