Excellent Price on a 95-Point White from a Northern Rhône Master - 12/03/2017 - Rhone Valley

For fans of northern Rhône white, it simply doesn’t get much better than this. The 2015 Condrieu from Yves Cuilleron is a superb rendition as we’ve ever encountered. Our enthusiasm for this vivacious white is echoed by the Wine Spectator with their glowing 95-point review. Given how well put together this 2015 is, it’s hardly surprising it’s garnered such attention. Equal parts exotic and downright delicious, it is a refined style of Condrieu summoning up engaging flavors and fragrances of honeysuckle, jasmine, ripe orchard and citrus fruit, and so much more. Perhaps most striking is how thoroughly approachable it is, even given its youth. Those who love a great bottle of Viognier will be more than pleased as it delivers all the best aspects of this noble grape. There is enough acidity here to enjoy this 2015 on its own, but it’s when paired with a special meal that the "La Petite Côte" shines most brightly. Its price of $44.99 seems almost criminally low given how perfectly composed it is. We’ve been loving the 2015 Rhônes, and when you combine such an excellent vintage with a supremely talented winemaker, it’s hardly surprising you get such a breathtaking result. Production is limited and only a small amount makes it to the States, so we expect our allocation to sell-out quickly.

2015 Yves Cuilleron "La Petite Côte" Condrieu ($44.99)

95 points Wine Spectator: "Layers of fig, pear, quince, nectarine and yellow apple fruit course through this gorgeous white, gilded with hazelnut oil, orange pith and bitter almond notes. Offers an opulent range, yet remains focused. Shows Viognier's uniqueness. Drink now through 2021. 210 cases imported. (JM)" (10/2017)

92 points Vinous: "Light green-tinged yellow. Textbook aromas of ripe citrus and pit fruits, violet and honey, lent urgency by a dusty mineral overtone. Densely packed and focused on the palate, offering energetic Meyer lemon, pear and white peach flavors sharpened by a gingery flourish. Shows real nerviness and mineral cut on the finish, which clings with impressive tenacity and focus. (JR)" (07/2017)

Exquisitely fragrant with wonderful summer stone fruits and jasmine blossom this has sublime texture on the palate, plenty of vivid acidity and a truly lingering finish. Sipping this takes me to another place, somewhere peaceful and beautiful.

What a gorgeous wine. Aromas of peaches, guavas, and a touch of pineapple melt onto the palate in an unparalleled, mouth watering texture that coats the taste buds. The finish is long and the wine slowly softens and only gets more interesting. This wine is undoubtedly the perfect go-to for curry, Thai, Chinese, and Vietnamese foods. Also a great way to dress up taco night!

Yves Cuilleron is one of the great vignerons of the northern Rhone with holdings in Cote-Rotie, St. Joseph, St. Peray and most importantly - Condrieu. With an unerring eye for detail, he composes not one but four different cuvees from the region. Many are afraid of Condrieu's perfumed and heady profile but Cuilleron keeps it all in balance with his south-south east facing slopes. The fruit intensity is evident but the higher elevation and cool nights keep the wines fresh and nervy (for Condrieu that is). The "La Petite Cote" bursts with aromas of honeysuckle, tangerine rind and bergamot tea making this a fleshy and supple Viognier poised for a whole host of food pairings. I love it with a salad of smoked salmon, fresh citrus and bitter greens. Or something heartier like a pork shoulder rubbed in African spices and roasted until its just falling apart. Fear not the flavor and intensity of Condrieu. In the hands of a master like Cuilleron, a deft touch delivers incredible drinking.
