One of Bourgueil's Best of a Great Vintage for Under $12 - 04/16/2016 - Loire Valley

This is quickly becoming a staff favorite here at K&L as Domaine Les Pins' 2014 "Les Rochettes" has so much going for it. As one of our best-selling wines in the category in the previous vintage, the 2014 is perhaps even better. It is so delicious and rewarding now, but will develop beautifully in the cellar. This gem also has a top-100 rating in Wine Enthusiast that makes it among the top in its category for a superb Loire vintage. All that for under $12 makes this nearly impossible to resist for those who love fresh, bright, and intrinsically enjoyable wines.

2014 Domaine Les Pins "Les Rochettes" Bourgueil ($11.99)

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "*Editors' Choice and #85 of Top 100 of 2015* This rich, structured wine is packed with both firm tannins and rich red fruits. Still young, it has all the makings of a dense, balanced wine that will reflect the great fruit of the vintage. Age this smoky, full-bodied wine and drink from 2017. (RV)" (11/2015)

Wine Spectator: "Fresh, with a bright core of black cherry and damson plum fruit flavors backed by light black olive and violet notes. Modest in scale but with very nice purity. Drink now through 2018. (JM, Web-2016)"

K&L Notes: A rich ruby red with notes of violets and red berry fruits, this Cabernet Franc is nicely layered on the palate with brightness running throughout and just a touch of smoke mixed in with some purple fruits. Soft waves of mineral with a nice soft tannin make this a true delight to drink. Domaine les Pins has been family run for five generations. They are a small artisanal producer that oversees every stage of production from start to finish themselves. They have roughly 30 hectares of Cabernet Franc spread out through the Bourgueil and Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil regions. They practice sustainable farming and each and every vine get singular attention throughout the year. Vines of an average age of 25 years are planted in sandy, clay and gravel soils. After harvest, grapes are de-stemmed, sorted and put into tank for spontaneous fermentation to begin. After being pressed off and letting malolactic fermentation happen the wine is put into concrete tank for at least 10 months prior to bottling.

This Bourgueil is aged in concrete tanks for at least 10 months and has everything young Cabernet Franc should have: aromas of fresh red berries and floral notes. On the palate it is medium bodied, fruity and supple with moderate acidity and long finish. Flavors of blackberry, wild cherry and black raspberry dominate the palate but light earthiness is coming through nonetheless. Its a beautiful Bourgueil wine to enjoy now with mushroom dishes or rack of lamb.

This was my very favorite find from today's excellent Loire valley tasting. The Les Rochettes Bourgueil from Domaine Les Pins transported me from Redwood City to my minds Paris bistro after just one taste. This would be perfect with poulet roti, steak frites or any other bistro classic. It has wonderful black olive hints framing a core of aromatic blue fruit and lifted acidity that makes me want to go back for more. I am buying some of this now and bringing it home!

Herbaceous on the nose with rosemary and rosy floral notes, Les Rochettes opens with gorgeous green aromatics, stays light through the palate and finishes with smoky white pepper and the perfect touch of tannin. Surprisingly quenching for dry Cabernet Franc, this is a complex and very drinkable wine at an incredible price.

Wonderfully spicy aromatics, just a hint of herbaceousness in the nose, on the palate the wine has good weight for a wine in this price range, warm, rich and pleasing with just a bit of tannin to let you know what youre drinking. A perfect French Café red, easy, everyday drinking. How do you say Burger in French?
