'09 Janvier Jasnieres ($16.99) 91 WA - 11/12/2010 - Loire Valley

Never heard of the Jasnieres AOC? Well, it just happens to be the northernmost growing region of the Loire, which by all rights should be too cold to grow grapes. But, thanks to the Loir River (not the Loire River but a 350 kilometer-long tributary to the Loire) there is microclimate here somewhat similar to the Touraine. The Chenin Blanc produced here are sometimes compared to those of Savennieres but tend to be a touch more delicate. Jasnieres provides a definition of terroir with its persuasive underlying minerality which comes from the rich veins of silex running through the soil. This is a Chenin which will make you think about wine...

2009 Pascal Janvier Jasnieres ($16.99)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Janvier’s 2009 Jasnieres assembled from many pieces in February (the same date as for his other wines) – smells of orange blossom, musky narcissus, candied orange rind, iris, honeysuckle, and quince. White peach and lime combine with the aforementioned floral and quince notes on a palate of silken texture yet levity, with subtly bitter notes of peach kernel and citrus rind helping to keep the residual sugar that’s present from making the wine taste significantly sweet. The crustacean element in the present instance is like the whole oyster: shell, liqueur, all mingled with the fruit and flowers in a distinctively – indeed, from a global perspective, deviantly – delicious denouement. Janvier says he thinks this is similar to his 2005 but a bit less rich. I can’t say, because I started with 2006, and Javier can’t even muster a bottle of his 2008 any longer to compare side-by-side, much less a 2005. I’m guessing this superb value will keep well for at least 4-5 years, the inherently more fragile fruit of 2006 not yet showing any sings of fading." 90 points Wine Spectator: "Still a little tight, with a talcum powder hint fronting for the core of blanched almond, honeysuckle, quince and pear skin, followed by a long and very elegant finish. This should develop nicely with modest cellaring. Drink now through 2012." (12/10)

This wine is so delicious, that words alone would not do it justice. Let's just say, if an Angel takes you to a wine-bar in Heaven, this wine would very likely be served there. Yes, this Jasnieres is that good !Or you could just bring a little Heaven into your life by drinking this wine...
