2010 Basilio Izquierdo "Acodo" Blanco Rioja

SKU #1139621

Longtime former Cune winemaker Basilio Izquierdo has been hard at work in his Laguardia winery, producing excellent, highly original Rioja wines from older vineyards he personally sources for the high quality of their fruit. This particular wine is produced primarily from old, massale selection Viura blended with Garnacha Blanca. The vineyard, located in San Vicente, has very poor, minimal top soil sitting on a bedrock of limestone. Bright and richly textured yellow and citric fruits show weight (as you'd expect from the Garnacha Blanca contribution) but it's also very mineral, very refreshing. Clearly the quality of these old vines, combined with the intelligent elevage (fermentation in small vats, extended time on the lees, a brief stint in twice-used, 600-liter barrels) makes for a wonderful white, ideal for a special occasion meal. Wow- I have never had white Rioja like this before! On a scale similar to the best white Bordeaux, this complex white is full of lanolin in the mouth and has one of the longest finishes of any wine that I have tasted this year. The Basilio Izquierdo Acodo has persistence that one wouldn't even hope for in a $100 bottle of wine, so if you want something adventurous and exotic, it will not disappoint! What a bottle!
