2011 Gritsch "Axpoint" Gruner Veltliner Federspiel Wachau (Previously $30)

SKU #1137558

The Axpoint vines are located at the bottom of the famed Singerriedel vineyard. This is an old vineyard with 40 plus year old vines. The soils are a little bit deeper than that of the terraced Singerreidel above, which provides for a touch more power and texture. This also makes the wine a little richer and gives it a longer finish. It is a very typical Wachau Gruner Veltliner, with a peppery spice and lots of flowers popping out of the glass. There is a wonderful elegance that shines on the palate with really good length and a juicy finish. Drink now after decanting or over the next 5-7 years.

Produced from old vines, this intense, opulent Gruner gives the classic clout of a great wine. Rich, lush, focused, broad, and viscous, this old vine production offers tons of that Gruner white pepper to an almost clove-like fruit quality on the nose and well into the mouth. This elegant Gem is an amazing example of this varietal, and, according to Eby, will be one of our house Gruners for the month. Enjoy, immensely! 12.0% ABV
Drink from 2013 to 2020

The Gritsch Axpoint shows a full, rich, character from start to wide, glycerol finish. Aromas of star fruit, talc, and tangerine lead into a palate of beeswax, blossom, and orange, while a subtle, bitter under current adds an enlivening contrast. With its bold, but not heavy, personality, this would be a good match for richer white wine fare. The relative intensity of flavor at this price point marks it as a particular value.

This single vineyard has long been one of my favorites from Gritsch, especially at this price. It has plenty of depth and complexity running through it but I never feel guilty for “accidently” making a bottle disappear while cooking in the kitchen and having to open another one.

Nice complexity with loads of minerality.

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Gruner Veltliner

- Grüner Veltliner is the most widely planted grape variety in Austria, making up about a third of all the vineyard land in the country, according to importer extraordinaire Terry Thiese. The varietal has definitely increased in popularity of the past few years, as sommeliers and wine directors loaded their lists with this spicy white because it pairs well with so many things. Its bouquet has been described as floral, tending to toward musky, with hints of peppery greens, lentils, citrus and red fruit with a distinctive mineral quality. In the mouth the wine can be broad or precise, but is almost always distinguished by bracing acidity and flavors that mirror the nose. A notoriously good ager, you can drink GrüVes in their youth, or let them evolve in complexity in your cellar.
Country:

Austria

- Austria is a well-respected wine-growing region in Europe. Yet, even though they make about a third the volume of wine as Germany, not many of these fine bottles make it to the shelves of American wine merchants or restaurants. Lucky for us, their anonymity has translated into incredible value from simple, everyday whites to exquisite dessert wines. Austria shares many grape varieties with Germany—Riesling is king here, too. But the style of Austrian whites is much dryer and more potent. Grüner Veltliner is Austria's second-most-important varietal and makes whites of great versatility and pleasure. Click for a list of bestselling items from Austria.
