We here at K&L couldn't be more excited to bring you the first wine in new project with wineries from around the US, working with our team directly to make exclusive bottlings for our customers. The idea was to approach wineries or winemakers we love, and ask them to create exclusive wines to our specifications. Furthermore we wanted to not only promote these outstanding wines but the wineries behind them rather than putting the wines in an anonymous house label (which is sometimes necessary when the winery prefers to remain hidden). We hope that you think that these wines offer a tremendous value and a slightly different expression of wineries that you are already familiar with. The first of these wines is the 2010 Qupé "Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard-K&L Selection" Edna Valley Syrah. This wine was first discussed back in February when we paid a visit to Qupé on a trip to the Central Coast. We explained the idea to Bob Lindquist, winemaker and owner of Qupé, and he was all ears. We tasted a couple of possible blends that he'd been working on and really liked this single vineyard wine that was from his "Estate" vineyard, the Sawyer-Lindquist Vineyard, which was originally planted in 2005 and certified Bio-Dynamic by Demeter in 2009. I believe that Qupe is at the top of the Central Coast Rhone varietal game and I'm sure the majority of the staff here at K&L will agree with me! We were fortunate enough to visit Bob Lindquist back in February and, along with tasting plenty of his great wines, came away with a co-branded bottle of Syrah. Black cherry, blueberry, mineral, and black pepper spice round out this killer wine for $20!

One swirl and black cherry leaps from the glass, along with violet, cassis, red currant and spice. Continues onto the palate with red cherry, vanilla, black and red berries, mineral with fine, well-integrated tannin & medium plus, approachable acidity. Long, lingering finish. Bright, fresh, elegant, lovely. CRAZY at $20!

This lovely Gem was a special bottling produced for us by owner/winemaker Robert Lindquist at Qupé from a vineyard that he planted in 2005. Medium-deep ruby in color, the incredibly opulent bouquet of spicy white pepper to dried red rose petals fruit is supported by a lush, almost creamy back note presentation. My immediate impression in the mouth is that this truly wonderful wine is perfectly balanced, integrated and broad, with a substantial, flashy, complex varietal fruit offering, subtle notes of vanillan oak, integrated silky tannins, viscous mouthfeel, layers of flavor, excellent depth and structure, and a finish that is warm, bright, and long. Rusty has informed that this superb Gem will be one of our house reds for however long it is around. What’s our retail price on this puppy…. No, no, no, that can’t be correct, but it is! Think Crozes-Hermitage when you try this Gem. 13.5% ABV

This fresh and stylish wine is focused, pure and clean with just a slight earthy quality to the aromatics. A touch of spice peeks through the ripe cherry and deep huckelberry fruit and the faintest suggestion of raw meat juice reminds you that this is after all syrah. This is fantastic quality from one of the most consistant producers in California.

Well, we all knew Qupe was brilliant but this wine is beyond anything I expected. Bright nose of blueberry, cherry and smokey meats with an explosion of fruit in the middle palate surrounded by layers of flavors and spice. Acid and structure combine nicely to give us a wonderful light and fresh California Syrah. Superb on it's own our with a lovely plate of pork ribs.

A blend of 91% Syrah and 9% Grenache this is a lovely wine already with alluring aromatics of cocoa powder, dried fennel, camphor and subtle notes of bacon smoke covering warm blueberry muffins. Soft and inviting this is wonderful right now with supple, caressing texture and fleshy black fruits all pinned down by velvety tannins and some pleasing black pepper spice. Long and juicy on this finish this keeps echoing flavors found on the palate along with notes of fried sage and sweet licorice. I couldn’t be happier with the wine and think it is going to be just as well received as a cocktail wine as it will on the dinner table. Think cassoulet, short ribs and pork loin as willing and justified partners.

Shiraz/Syrah

- One of France's noblest black grape varieties, Syrah is known for its intense and distinctive perfume reminiscent of briar fruit, tar, spice and black pepper and its firm structure. One of few black grape varietals frequently vinified on its own, the best examples of Syrah come from the Northern Rhône, particularly Hermitage, but also Côte-Rôtie, Cornas, Crozes-Hermitage and St-Joseph. These wines are very astringent in their youth, though some Crozes-Hermitage and St-Joseph can be enjoyed young, relatively speaking. Given the requisite patience, though, these wines can reveal amazing complexity and secondary fruit characteristics like plum and blackcurrant as well as subtle hints of smoke and flowers. In the Southern Rhône, Syrah is used to add structure and complexity to wines dominated by Grenache and complemented by Mourvèdre, like the more immediately drinkable Côte du Rhônes, as well as the long-lived wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In recent years, plantings of Syrah have spread throughout the Languedoc-Roussillon where it is produced on its own or blended with other varietals. Outside of France, the most important Syrah growing country is easily Australia, where it is called Shiraz. Quality levels here depend greatly on yields and geography, and the wines range from bold, fruity and easy-drinking to intense and ageable, like the famed Penfolds Grange. Often bottled on its own, in Australia Syrah is also can be blended with Grenache and Mourvèdre, as in the Southern Rhône, and is increasingly combined with Cabernet Sauvignon. Syrah has also been steadily increasing in popularity in California, thanks to a group of advocates called the Rhône Rangers. Its most successful iterations come from the Central and Sonoma Coasts, where winemakers are pushing boundaries and creating some incredible wines. In recent years Syrah has also found a number of proponents in Washington State, which is definitely a region to watch for this variety.

- Santa Maria and Sants Inez make up the two AVAs of Santa Barbara County, an area known for its natural beauty and temperate climate. The best grape-growing areas, however, are located on the very coastal reaches of these two appellations, and are cooled by ever-present fog and ocean breezes (it is even cooler and foggier here than Carneros!). As expected, chardonnay and pinot noir thrive while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhône blends.
