Our domstic team loved the wines so much on their Central Coast buy trip earlier this year they brought them in immediately for us to try, and we're hooked! These are wines for serious Riesing lovers, and Graham Tatomer is a winemaker to watch. The 2009 Tatomer “Kick-On Ranch” Santa Barbara County Riesling convinved me this guy knows his Riesling. With pure lime, peach and stone fruits, bracing acidity, and fine mineral framing, this is high caliber stuff that will complement a variety of dishes.

I am going to apologize to everyone right up front because I know with absolute certainty that whatever I say about this wine I am simply not going to do it justice. The cold hard truth is that I am not as good a writer as Graham Tatomer is a winemaker. But let me say this. If you are a fan of Riesling, and especially if you are inclined to be dismissive of California Riesling, you MUST try this wine. IMMEDIATELY. This is a dry style of Riesling but with exceptional richness of texture. (Think Austria not Germany here. Graham has spent quite of bit of time apprenticing at Weingut Knoll, one of the preeminent producers of Riesling and Gruner Veltliner in the Wachau. If you want to totally geek out, try this wine alongside the 2011 Emmerich Knoll Riesling Smaragd.) Generous stone fruits. Lively minerality. Pristine focus and clarity. A game changing wine from one of the most exciting young winemakers in Santa Barbara County today.

From a NW facing hillside vineyards north of Santa Rita Hills comes this fantastic dry Riesling offering from Tatomer. This has a beautiful floral nose with melon and citrus notes. Richer than the "Sisquoc" bottling, this has a viscous mouth feel with lavender, pear, and apricot intermingling with a saline streak persistent throughout the wine. Beautiful.

Graham Tatomer knows what he is doing with Riesling in Santa Barbara County. Don't believe me? Try this incredible wine! The wine spends a year in neutral oak in the winery, followed by another year in bottle before release. White stone fruit, white flowers, citrus and slately minerality with medium plus acidity.

Riesling

- While the rest of the world has often misappropriated the name--Welchriesling, Riesling Italico, Gray Riesling and Emerald Riesling are all names applied to varieties that are NOT Riesling--this exceptional German varietal has managed to maintain its identity. Perhaps its biggest claims to fame are its intoxicating perfume, often described as having honeyed stone fruit, herb, apple and citrus notes, and its incredible longevity - the wines lasting for decades. Aged Rieslings often take on a distinctive and alluring Petrol-like aroma. Within Germany, the grape seems to do best in the warming slate soils of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer. Other German regions that turn out great Rieslings include Pfalz, Rheingau and Nahe. German Rieslings are made in a range of ripeness levels. The top wines are assigned Prädikat levels to describe their ripeness at harvest. These are: Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Eiswein and Trockenbeerenauslese. Riesling has also achieved acclaim in France's Alsace, the only region in that country where the grape is officially permitted. Alsatian Rieslings are typically dry and wonderfully aromatic. Austrian Riesling is also steadily gaining praise and fine Riesling is also produced in Italy's Alto-Adige and Friuli, in Slovenia and much of Central and Eastern Europe. In the New World its stronghold is Australia, where it does best in the Eden and Clare Valleys. It is also planted in smaller amounts in New Zealand. In the US, winemakers are eschewing the syrupy sweet versions of the 1970s and 1980s, instead making elegant and balanced wines in both California and Washington State.

Santa Maria/Santa Barbara

- Santa Maria and Sants Inez make up the two AVAs of Santa Barbara County, an area known for its natural beauty and temperate climate. The best grape-growing areas, however, are located on the very coastal reaches of these two appellations, and are cooled by ever-present fog and ocean breezes (it is even cooler and foggier here than Carneros!). As expected, chardonnay and pinot noir thrive while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhône blends.
