2007 Antaño Reserva Rioja

SKU #1124499 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Better is the 2007 Antano Reserva, based on 90% Tempranillo aged for 24 months in barrel. It has an attractive bouquet of blackberry, spice and cooked meat with impressive lift and vivacity. The palate is well-balanced, with seamlessly integrated oak that allows the terroir to come through. Nicely balanced with a gentle, understated finish, this is a fine, traditional, understated Rioja Reserva. Drink now-2017. Marques de Carrion produces classic Rioja wines from their winery based in Labastida. The fruit is sourced from old vines in 'La Sonsierrra' and matured in both American and French oak. Both wines represent excellent value. (NM) (8/ 2012)

K&L Notes

Antaņo is the label produced by Carrion, one of the more popular brands of Rioja in Spain. Leave it to the Spaniards, where Rioja commands a strong share of the local market, to figure out the best values in Rioja! Here we have a Reserva for a mere $9.99. It is made in robust quantities, but from a typical blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, with lots of the fruit coming from Briones (this is the village where our own Miguel Merino has his vineyards). In the slightly cooler 2007 vintage, this wine shows lovely balance of fruit and savor, with a palate of dark cherry fruit intermingling with braised meat and hints of cocoa powder. Here we have a great example of both traditional style Rioja. as well as Spain's prowess at making wonderful wines in plentiful quantities. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer).

Interested in a traditional, reserva level Rioja for a song? If so, then we've got something for you. Full of savory notes (braised meat, agridulce pimenton and herbs) balanced by bass toned fruit all wrapped in a classically velvety, very Rioja texture, this is a wine to enjoy with food, and one that you could not mistake for anything other than Rioja.

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Tempranillo

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penčdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.
Country:

Spain

- With more land under vine than any other country in the world, Spain is the great sleeping wine giant. In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
