You’ll find plenty of tannins in this darkly colored, impressively concentrated 100% Cabernet. It’s fresh, soft and juicy in blackberry and cherry jam flavors, with a rich earthiness.  Vivid ruby. Ripe cherry and cassis on the nose and palate, with a smoky nuance adding complexity. Sappy and open-knit, with very good finishing clarity and gentle tannic grip. Very approachable now but also has the balance to age.  (6/ 2013)

 *One Star* Heading off in a much different direction than its companion bottling above, Laurel Glen's Counterpoint is a fairly rounded, ripe and obvious medium-full-bodied working whose emphasis is on straightforward fruit. It picks up just enough back-palate coarseness to argue for a couple of years in the bottle, but it does not cry out for long aging and will be enjoyable after only a minimal wait.  (12/ 2012)

 Laurel Glen's 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Counterpoint is an attractive, juicy wine with good near-term appeal. Juicy, expressive and radiant, the 2009 wraps around the palate with dark red cherries, plums, sweet spices and flowers. I have been a huge fan of Laurel Glen for many years now, and love breaking an old bottle out of the cellar for special occasions. They also make one of the finest values in estate bottled California Cabernet Sauvignon with their Sonoma Mountain Counterpoint. The 2009 is bolder and riper than most of the Laurel Glen offerings, but still has the cool, leathery, curranty flavors and suave texture and finish. Treat yourself, you can afford it!

Decanted for 1.5 hours and paired with grilled pork chops off the grill, broiled veggies, and rice. Thin, round, soft, Merlot-type Cab. Very delicate and smooth but not at all complex. I guess this is what a rustic, mountain cab tastes like when highly extracted? Fruit profile was extremely hard to pin down other than plums. But overall, body stands out as balanced and well made. Not at all my style but definitely a non-offensive crowd-pleaser. Versatile with many foods. Drink before 2016.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
