Matanzas Creek's Merlot is sourced from the terraced vineyards of Jackson Park Ranch, almost 1000 feet above the floor of Bennett Valley. It is planted to Merlot clone 181, which is known to be cloned directly from Chateau Petrus in Pomerol. For some additional structure, the wine is blended with 14% Cabernet Sauvignon from the winery's moutain vineyard sites in Knights Valley. From the winery: "A beautiful garnet red color, the nose of our signature Merlot is a collection of fresh herbs including thyme, sage and clove followed by black currants and licorice."
