Made from a blend of fruit from three vineyard sites in Santa Barbara County--the warmer Honea and Walker Vineyards in Santa Ynez and the cooler Zotovich Vineyard in Santa Rita Hills--Palmina's 2010 Dolcetto is pure fruit, flavor, and fun. The nose leads with blackberry jam and earth spice notes, punctuated by a hints of savory herbs followed by a palate that is round, soft, and smooth. Vinified in a combination of neutral oak and stainless steel, this purple-tinted Dolcetto is a dry, food-friendly red wine meant for drinking, on its own or with a variety of foods. Palmina is among the finest producers of wines from Italian varietals in California and we love this clean, pure, and honest expression of Dolcetto.

There is a surprising brightness and liveliness to the dark fruit of this Dolcetto, a variety not typically known for brightness. Yet another great Cal-Ital effort from the masters of the genre at Palmina!

Dolcetto

- How could you not love a great with a name that means "little sweet one?" But don't let that deceive you. This varietal, grown in Italy's Piedmont, may be a low-acid, fruit-forward red, but it can also have significant tannic structure, particularly those from the Dogliani DOC. Traditionally vinified dry, wines made from Dolcetto tend to have a sweet edge to them, with ripe red fruit flavors and perfumed bouquets. According to the Oxford Companion to Wine, many producers have learned to manage its tannic edge with shorter fermentation. There are a total of seven DOCs that produce Dolcetto: Dolcetto d'Aqui, Dolcetto d'Asti, Dolcetto di Diano d'Alba, Dolcetto delle Langhe Monregalesi, Dolcetto di Dolgiani, Dolcetto di Ovada and Dolcetto d'Alba. Dolcetto is also grown in the Italy's Liguria where it is called Ormeasco.

- Santa Maria and Sants Inez make up the two AVAs of Santa Barbara County, an area known for its natural beauty and temperate climate. The best grape-growing areas, however, are located on the very coastal reaches of these two appellations, and are cooled by ever-present fog and ocean breezes (it is even cooler and foggier here than Carneros!). As expected, chardonnay and pinot noir thrive while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhône blends.
