The 2005 Moon Mountain Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon with layered, complex flavors that beautifully reflect the rugged terroir with intense wild dark fruits and crushed black currant character. Dynamic, velvety, tannins structure this opulent wine and promise some additional aging potential, but at this price, who cares? Enjoy it! Moon Mountain Vineyard is located high on the Sonoma Valley side of Mount Veeder, at nearly the 2,000-foot elevation. "Winegrowing" on Sonoma's Mayacamas Mountains, home to Moon Mountain Vineyard, began in 1857 when Agoston Haraszthy--often called the father of the California wine industry--bought 560 acres stretching from the Sonoma Valley floor high up the mountain range. We've enjoyed several vintages of this wine and with this discount it's one to gobble up quickly.

I found this wine to be surprisingly elegant at this price point. It has a pleasant nose with coffee scents. It has a light body (for a cab) and silky tannins. I found earthy flavors in the mid-palate. A tiny grip in the finish. Only a hint of complexity, but quite good for $13. The K&L staff is right on this one. The sediment is quite heavy.

Drinkable for the price point but NOT outstanding and somewhat over-described by K&L staffers-The fact that there is still a lot of it around after this long at that price says it all

This is a great bottle of wine for the price. It won't knock your socks off, but it will surprise you at this price point. I have had 4 bottles from K&L and all have been very drinkable. Maybe I should order another case? Dusty pine nose, with a medium body black liquorice finish.

Great wine for the price, good fruit on the palate but not much structure in the acidity or tannins. Some complexity, medium length finish. After pouring a couple glasses I found a huge streak of sediment - totally didn't expect that from an '05! 3rd glass wasn't drinkable - definitely let this one stand for a few days before carefully decanting.

i am not sure anyone would pay $30 for this wine. Yes, some complexity here, but over-oaked to death.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
