1999 De Meric "Vintage Sous Bois" Brut Champagne (Previously $50)

SKU #1022709

We have been working with Champagne De Meric since the beginning of their renaissance, and now their first vintage Sous Bois has been released. It is composed of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay from the villages of Ay, Avize, Cramant, Oger, Mareuil-sur-Ay and Mutigny. It has a fantastic nose of fresh cream and bread dough and the palate has great black cherry Ay Pinot Noir power. There are subtle hints of orange peel and vanilla underneath, almost certainly coming from the all-wood fermentation. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

This wine reminds me of a slightly less "together" version of any of Louis Roederer's Carte Blanche offerings...

Old gold color indicates that this champagne either has a bit of oak or a bit of age (I'm guessing it might be a little of both here)...Smooth creamy nose with hints of fresh baked bread...

Buttery Rich palate with a slight almost indescribable fruitness, a hint of something that reminds me of amaretto, just a whisper of vanilla, and the slightest kiss of honey...This wine is full of subtle notes...bubbles look very fine and tight, but dont feel quite as "small" on the palate as I thought they might...

Slightly liquory finish with an etherial flavor of chery candy...creamy, with just a slight trace of bitterness...very good wine, especially considering the price...

WHAT! The 1999 De Meric Sous Bois at $35.99, unbelieveable! What I really enjoy about this Champagne, other than the price, is that it is made up of 70% Pinot Noir. The extra boldness from the Pinot grape adds depth and structure that balances out the wood fermentation, making this a winner in my book! I have enjoyed this with a Caesar salad topped with a local Dungeness crab cakes; lovely!
