1998 Birchwood "Twin Rivers" Cabernet Sauvignon

89 points Robert Parker: "The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Twin Rivers comes from a 40-year old vineyard. Production is small (250 cases), but the wine is very good, even excellent, with an elegant black currant, spice box, cedar, and dried herb-scented nose, attractive, medium to full-bodied flavors, low acidity, sweet tannin, and a clean finish. Drink it over the next 7-8 years." (08/2000)

1998 Wynns "Michael's" Shiraz, Coonawarra South Australia

94 points James Halliday. This is the flagship Shiraz from Wynns Coonawarra Estate. The first "Michael's" was first made from the 1955 vintage, when proprietor David Wynn noticed the exceptional quality from two particular barrels and had them bottled separately. The wine, named after his son Michael, is made only in top vintages and was revived with the superb 1990 vintage. Ripe and full bodied, this wine has a great velvet texture. Aromas of cherry, raspberry, earth and spice abound and follow on the palate with a lush long finish. Aged in new and one-y ...

1998 Domaine Brusset "Les Hauts de Montmirail" Gigondas

91-93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated full ruby-purple. Brilliant aromas of cassis, black raspberry, bitter chocolate, minerals, licorice and spicy oak. Superripe and extremely dense, yet almost magically fresh and delineated thanks to firm acidity and pungent underlying minerality. Possesses a deep core of spice that goes beyond mere oak. Finishes with substantial but even tannins, dark chocolate and a strong new oak component. Very impressive. (ST)" (01/2000) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1998 Gigondas L ...

1998 Pride Mountain Napa-Sonoma Counties Merlot

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Sleek and elegant, the wine is blessed with fine tannins and supple texture, and its blackberry, plum, cassis, chocolate and herb flavors flood the palate in a rush that finishes long and luxuriously. Top-notch Merlot." (12/2001) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Impressive. Espresso-style, deeply concentrated Merlot, boasting a core of rich currant, coffee, black cherry and anise. Firms up on the finish, where a touch of bay leaf adds complexity to the flavor profile. *Spectator Selection* (JL)" (09/2000)

1998 Domaine de Beaurenard "Boisrenard" Ch√Ęteauneuf-du-Pape

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: " Noticeably more youthful than the classic cuvee, the 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Boisrenard is roughly 85% Grenache and 15% Mourvedre, yet it includes all 13 of the permitted varieties as well. Coming mainly from the lieux-dits of Beaurenard, Cabrieres and Coteaux de l'Ange, it spent 18 months in small barrel. Currants, black cherries, new leather and wild herb characteristics all emerge from this full-bodied, seamless and elegant Chateauneuf du Pape. Much more civilized and polish than in its youth, it's fu ...

1998 Domaine Santa Duc "Prestige des Hautes Garrigues" Gigondas

94 points Wine Spectator: "Gorgeous ripeness and exotic smoke, plum and blackberry flavors melt together in a full-bodied, creamy-textured package. Massive tannins are ripe but should close down the wine for a while, so age a few years or decant before serving." (08/2000) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1998 Gigondas Prestige des Hautes Garrigues achieved 15.64% alcohol, but the 1998 Mourvedre battered all records as it came in at a whopping 15.8% natural alcohol. Of course, this wine would not merit its high score if it did not completel ...

1998 Pride Mountain Sonoma County Cabernet Franc

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I am amazed by how spectacular Pride Mountain's Cabernet Franc continues to be. The fabulous 1998 Cabernet Franc is a noteworthy achievement in this difficult vintage. Its deep purple color is accompanied by a gorgeous bouquet of cedar, spice box, black fruits, smoke, and earth. In the mouth, there is a smorgasbord of sweet black fruits with a hint of dried Provencal herbs. Opulent and full-bodied, with marvelous concentration yet an eerie sense of weightlessness, this rich, complex 1998 can be drunk now as well ...

1998 Talbot, St. Julien

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Readers should be aware that this is a wine I underrated in my original report on the 1998 vintage. It is performing better out of bottle than it did from cask. With age, the mid-section has filled out and the wine has put on weight. A deep plum/garnet color is accompanied by an up-front, seductive nose of melted licorice, cedar, plums, black cherries, and cassis. This attractive Talbot is nicely-textured and medium to full-bodied, with sweet tannin. It is pleasing to see how this wine has matured. Anticipated maturity: 20 ...
