1934 Viuva José Gomes da Silva & Filhos Colares Riserva Velho
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1934 Viuva José Gomes da Silva & Filhos Colares Riserva Velho. The little-known region of Colares enjoyed a brief time in the sun in the first few decades of the 20th century, as it was one of the few European wine regions to escape the ravages of phylloxera, thanks to its sandy soils and coastal climate. The also little-known Ramisco varietal is and was the resident grape for the region's winemakers. Gomes da Silva & Filhos is undoubtedly the most famous and most widely available producer from this region, with vintages from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s routinely wowing collectors and geeks across the online wine community (just check out the threads on Cellar Tracker and Wine Berserkers to get a sense of what these wines are capable of). Leacock ''1872'' Madeira
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of Leacock ''1872'' Madeira. John Leacock sailed to Madeira from the United Kingdom (after the death of his father) in 1741 and at the age of 15 became the youngest apprentice at the firm of Madeira merchants, Catanach and Murdoch staying until his contract expired on 11 March 1749. During his apprenticeship he had been in constant contact with an old school friend, John Patient, residing at that time in Charles Town, South Carolina who suggested that they themselves should commence trading. Leacock agreed and this marks the birth of the now world famous company.
