Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 IX Estate is composed of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, 11% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. Opaque purple-black colored, the nose is quite closed and shy to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal freshly crushed blackberries, mulberries and blackcurrants plus suggestions of dusty soil, bouquet garni, pencil lead and cast-iron pan with gentle wafts of sandalwood, cardamom, rare beef and black tea. This sensational wine reminds me of the 2016 Mon Aïeul from Pierre Usseglio with its awesome perfume of sweet blackberry and cassis fruits, smoke meats, exotic spice, licorice, and garrigue-like aromas and flavors. Deep, rich and layered on the palate, with a massive core of sweet fruit, this beauty builds with time in the glass and has incredible purity of fruit, a mix of richness and elegance that's hard to describe, sweet tannins, and a huge finish. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2005 La Rioja Alta "904" Gran Reserva Rioja (96RP, 96WE, 95JS, 94VN, 93W&S, 92WS, 90DC). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Gran Reserva 904 is a superb blend of Tempranillo from the villages of Briñas, Labastida and Villalba with 10% Graciano from Briones and Rodezno. The grapes were destemmed and crushed and fermented in stainless steel for 18 days at 25 C. Malolactic fermentation was spontaneous and lasted 38 days. These wines are marked by a long aging in used American oak barrels following the most strict Riojan tradition; four years during which time the wine was manually racked eight times. This is usually my favorite wine from La Rioja Alta and 2005 is one of its best showings, going back to the quality of the vintages of the 1950s and 60s. The nose is very balsamic with notes of camphor, hints of mint, leather and hung game wrapped around a core of cherries in liqueur. Together it is balanced, subtle, truly elegant and classical. Vinous: "The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru has a very refined bouquet, quite sensual in style with intense red cherries and wild strawberry fruit infused with minerals. This is just pure class - as good as you will find from this vineyard. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, and very cohesive. A very elegant and refined finish. Of the 1975 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac,Decanter writes: "Jean-Michel Cazes’ third vintage, and his records of the harvest note excellent weather conditions almost every day up in Pauillac. Harvest of Merlot began at Lynch Bages on September 25 (it had been expected to start on the 29th until the rains fell) and lasted until October 12th (a Sunday when Cazes described the fermentations as going ‘very very well’). Only one or two vats needed chaptilisation because natural sugar levels were so high. On the nose, a touch of band aid suggests brett, but this soon clears and the wine is full of life. Tomato leaf on the attack, the mid palate has a seam of cassis and there is lovely menthol on the finish. This tasting was in bottle, and I followed it with a tasting from magnum a week later. Sweet layers of fruit, subtle herbs, cedar, tobacco and spices were all present in the glass, but the wine was really more about textural silkiness and elegance, both of which it showed in spades. Wine Spectator: "This has the range of the '61, with similar dried currant, fig and blackberry fruit forming the core, but the tannins are more prominent from the start. Alder and cedar base notes carry the tar-tinged finish, leading to an echo of bitter orange, iron and charcoal as this grows steadily and authoritatively in the glass. A tad longer than the '61. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 Montrose, St-Estèphe (97RP, 97VN, 96DC, 96JS, 95JD, 95WS). Vinous: "The 2005 Montrose replicated previous showings of that formidable wine. The bouquet is backward and here exuding more black fruit than previous bottles, rendering it more akin to the 2010 Montrose. With aeration those telltale scents of pencil lead emerge, although this bottle shows a touch more brine. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, a Montrose with huge backbone, solid to the point of being obdurate. Yet that would be overlooking the poise and delineation of this Montrose, the manner in which it gathers momentum towards the grippy finish. It is a truly great 2005 Bordeaux but it deserves a couple of decades in bottle. (NM)" (07/2018)

Vibrant, precise and beautifully chiseled, the 2010 boasts serious depth and concentration. The aromas and flavors are incredibly vivid in this textured, dazzling Cabernet Sauvignon. Hints of dark blue and black fruit, mocha, espresso and grilled herbs flesh out on the huge finish. Captivating violet lift to the aromas and flavors of cassis, kirsch, licorice and mocha. Plush and fine-grained; extremely deep in the middle palate but this extremely rich wine impresses as much for its finesse as for its sheer density and power. Finishes with wonderfully harmonious tannins and great slow-mounting length.
