Bid on this bottle of 1981 Duhart Milon, Pauillac. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "All of the Lafite domains were successful in 1981. Quite backward in development, this deep ruby colored wine has an attractive bouquet that suggests crushed black currants, fresh leather, and new oak. Relatively big, quite tannic, concentrated, astringent, and dry in the finish, this backward, somewhat dull wine begs for time." (01/1998)

Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1981 La Mission Haut-Brion, Graves (92JG, 90RP). John Gilman: "The 1981 La Mission is a very strong example of the vintage and the wine is drinking at its apogee at age thirty-five. The bouquet offers up a fine, complex blend of cassis, dark berries, cigar ash, a touch of new leather, a fine base of dark soil tones and a touch of La Mission’s medicinal overtones. On the palate the wine id deep, full-bodied and quite powerful in personality for an ’81, with broad shoulders, a superb core, fine soil signature and a long, still modestly chewy and tangy finish. This is not the most elegant example of La Mission, but it has depth and stuffing and delivers plenty of enjoyment. Ironically, I like the ’81 La Tour Haut-Brion almost as much as the La Mission in this vintage, though in its early years, the ’81 La Mission was much more elegant than it is today and was clearly the more interesting bottle. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1981 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (91RP, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine is close to full maturity, but it is capable of holding for another two decades. It reveals the classic Lafite bouquet of red and black fruits, cedar, fruitcake, and tobacco-like aromas. In the mouth, this medium ruby/garnet-colored wine displays a delicacy of fruit and sweet attack, but subtle, well-defined flavors ranging from tobacco, cigar box, cedar, and fruitcake. This is a savory, soft Lafite-Rothschild that is pleasing to both the intellect and the palate. (RP)" (12/1997)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1981 Latour, Pauillac (93DC). Decanter: "Often the measure of a great terroir and producer are the so-called off vintages, which frequently surprise and delight to punch far above their weight. The 81 Latour is a classic case in point. From an unheralded year, this particular bottle had clearly been kept in fabulous condition. The youthful colour is not dissimilar to the 96 and the nose still provides plenty of primary Cabernet-based fruit (classic cassis, lead pencil and cedar) with some tertiary notes in the background. Then a lovely attack on the palate; dry with very correct blackcurrant fruit, balsam, a hint of savoury iron rust and a vein of autumnal forest floor. Gentle, melting tannins, medium weight and a clean acidic cut enable the wine to glide effortlessly across the tastebuds. The finish is harmonious, long and cries out for another bottle. In short, a textbook claret which is now at its drinking best, even more so with a cut of roast lamb. (JS)

Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1981 Palmer, Margaux (92JG, (90-92RP)). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Stunning violet, cassis nose soars from the glass like a 1982! Well-balanced palate, acidic but with ample sweet black fruits with green pepper finish. Harmonious. The palate does not quite match the nose, with some stalky notes in the background, but this is a wonderful 1981. Tasted January 2002. (NM)" (01/2002)

Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1981 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien (94JG). John Gilman: "As I have written in the past, the 1981 vintage at Ducru-Beaucaillou is the great, sleeper vintage here in the decade of the 1980s and this is one of the top wines produced on the Gironde in ’81. This was the first time I had drunk it out of magnum and the wine is stellar in its larger format. The nose wafts from the glass in a youthful blend of sweet dark berries, cassis, cigar wrapper, a hint of the chipotles to come with further bottle age, a beautiful base of gravel, gentle fresh herb nuances and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and beautifully balanced, with a great core of fruit, moderate, seamless tannins and outstanding length and grip on the focused and complex finish. There is absolutely nothing “off vintage” about the superb 1981 Ducru. " (08/2016)
