The third vintage from this then fledgling operation in Napa's Stags Leap District, and proof that John Shafer already knew a thing or two before he began! Mature, with lead pencil shavings, tobacco notes and slightly drying cassis fruit.

Bid on this bottle of 1980 Joseph Phelps "Insignia" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (90JG). John Gilman: "The 1980 vintage was one of the more difficult in this era in California, and the team at Joseph Phelps worked tirelessly in the vineyards during this year to get yields down sufficiently to get the crop fully ripened. This they may have succeeded a bit more than was good for them, as the 1980 Insignia weighed in at a rather hefty 13.8% in alcohol when all was said and done in this vintage. The wine is aging nicely despite its formidable alcohol level, but displays a touch less precision and purity than is customary with this bottling in this era at Joseph Phelps. The bouquet is a sweet blend of black berries, chocolate, pomegranate, mint, lovely soil tones, gentle smoke tones and a bit of chipotle pepper with extended aeration.
